Did Mauser Werke Oberndorf ever build Type M’s in 9.3x62?

I’ve been through both of Mr. Speed’s books. It seems that the 9mm was the largest standard bore size for the Type M. I don’t think the existence of a special ordered example is beyond the realm of possibility. Has anyone ever seen or heard of a factory made Oberndorf Mauser Type M in 9.3x 62? Except for the banner steel buttplate (I’m still looking for one), I’ve gathered all of the parts necessary to build a reasonably authentic looking Oberndorf Type M style stutzen rifle. I’d love to see picks of a real one, if such exists!

Matt

Early Catalogues dont list 9.3x62 in S or M types, doesnt say that there may not be special order examples out there.
Not sure if you would want a short barrel 9.3x62 however!!
Good luck

Why not ? For example, SAKO L691 with carbine lenght full stock isn´t any uncommon rifle here in Finland.

Short tracker barrels for KR1s M03s etc make dandy brush guns in sambar country and due to the bore to case volume ratio lose little in velocity over full length barrels

I say go for it. Be keen to see photos of the build.

CZ offered the 20” barreled 550 FS stutzen model in 9.3x62 for several years, here in the States. I do not intend to lean on the throttle. This rifle will be used for forest still hunting and possibly riding in a saddle scabbard in the Rockies. Recoil will not be an issue. I’ve toyed with the idea of a Type M in 10.75x68. While I’m not particularly recoil sensitive, that round would likely be a little much for me.

In 1939 you could have ordered a Mannlicher Schönauer that way, either 9.3X62 or 10.75X68, though the barrel may have been 24". Note the 'special orders' listed near the bottom of the page, particularly "full stock in rifles which normally have half stock".

These old SAKO L691´s aren´t any handmade custom rifles but if you compare their quality to any other factory made ones, you could notice that their finishing level is quite high.

In the beginning caliber 9,3x62 was designed to big game Africa hunt so it´s very understandable that any speed to reach was desireable. That´s why most rifles with that caliber had long barrel. Nowadays bespoke caliber is very popular in Europe, mostly when hunting boars, bears and moose. Shorter rifles in these hunts has increased their popularity quite rapidly and that for good reasons.

Ironically, I happen to own a Type A in 9.3x62 made in 1939! However, mine has a 23.62” (600mm), not the 25” barrel.

This is a little off point, but it's interesting to me how scarce Type M's in .30-06 seem to be. I've only ever seen one for sale. There are many Type B's in this caliber, and a good many Type A's, but (seemingly) far fewer in Type M. I would think a Type M in .30-06 would be a great hunting rifle.

My Mannlicher Schönauer M1910 takedown has a 60 cm barrel.

I don't know how indicative this is, but I have owned two Type M's in .30-'06, and still have one at the present. The first one was unaltered and I was loath to change its pristine condition, but the one I now own had been reworked by Griffin & Howe at some point, presumably in the 1930's, and exemplifies all the alterations I would have made myself, with the exception of the height of the scope mount. I would have mounted the scope as low as possible and consigned the Lyman 48 slide to the butt trap.

I have came across several several Type M’s in 30-06. Interestingly, all have had the inside bow release bottom metal and double set triggers. A Type M in 06’ would be sweet. I once owned a S-M 1950 or 52 stutzen in 06’. I wish I had not traded it!

I have a M/S 1950 Stutzen in 9.3X62. It started life as a .270 Winchester, but I had it rebored and rechambered. To me a short barreled .270 makes no sense at all, except as a boon to audiologists.

It's a handful.

There are currently two Oberndorf Type M carbines in ‘06 for sale on Gunsinternational. The serial numbers are #82744 and #82811. I am traveling right now, but I believe my Type M ‘06 action is close in that numerical range, and the lovely carbine pictured above is #82820. I guess Mauser may have made a batch of them at this time (1921 or so).

Here is a lousy photo I took years ago. It shows an early-1970s model NO marked full stocked Mannlicher – Schoenauer in 9.3x62 with a 60 cm = 24” barrel.

Thanks to everybody for the kind words about my Type M. I particularly like the sights, and the setup works really well. It's such a shame the Lyman cocking piece sight is no longer available. Sometimes you will see one at a gun show or on eBay. My advice is to scoop it up. The price will seem outlandish, but worth it.

Re: Did Mauser Werke Oberndorf ever build Type M’s in 9.3x62

For the record in answer to the OP's original question, no it seems that the Mauser carbines, the Type M being one of them, "were not made in calibres 9.3, 10,75 or 404 because their 19.69" barrels were of insufficient length for proper combustion of heavy powder charges"

This quoted from Ludwig Olson's book Mauser Bolt Rifles which has an extensive section on the Oberndorf Mauser Sporters.

Re: Did Mauser Werke Oberndorf ever build Type M’s in 9.3x62

Curl,

Do you know what your Model M weighs? I have owned a couple of them, though none as nice as yours and they are both long sold, but I never weighed them or at least I never recorded their weights. I ask because I recently read that the Model S is appreciably lighter than the Model M. I was not aware of this and would like to confirm it. I still have a Model S and weighed it for comparison purposes. On my scale, my Model S weighs right at 6 lb. 8 oz. without the Wehrmann peep sight.

Thanks.

Sincerely, Rob

Re: Did Mauser Werke Oberndorf ever build Type M’s in 9.3x62

So, nearly a half pound more for your Model M. That is quite a bit. I suppose the steel buttplate, steel forend cap and the peep sight could account for the difference. Also, a DST might weigh a bit more than the single trigger. And differing wood densities can add or subtract a few ounces as well. I think that without using the same scale and breaking down both a Model M and a Model S and weighing all the components, there is really no way to do this any more accurately.

Thanks

Yes, yours is the later version. The older one has rear sight which has round barrel foot and even sling front attacment is round the barrel model.
I has such one converted to 9,3x64 Brenneke but sold it on this spring to my friend. Mine was, in the beginning, similar like this:
