Czech rifles

How would you rate the ZG47, 21H,22F, ZKK600, and CZ-550 series in terms of workmanship, handling, weight, and overall quality?

Had a ZKK602 & a 7x57 600 or 601, whichever it was - BOTH SUPER rifles.

Re: Czech rifles

Hi JDL,

In terms of fit and finish, to me, the listing is: 21/22 series, ZG47, early ZKKs, CZ550, late ZKK.
In terms of general design: ZG47, early ZKK, CZ 550, late ZKK. I have mixed feelings about the 21/22. If not for its double triggers (very few came with a single trigger from the factory), I would rate just behind the ZG47.
I have, and have had, early and late ZKK, and have closely seen the superb ZG47 and 21/22. And fail to have both by my own stupidity....I still kick myself...

G'Day Fella's,

JDL, in terms of quality of design and manufacture, Brno and CZ made firearms, are exceedingly good.

Some time after the Russians invaded (Czech-Slovakia) in 1968, the quality of workmanship, and finish of both metal and wood work, dropped off.
This improved again, after The Wall came down, and they became the Czech Republic.

I have 4 Brno/CZ made rifles, and I'm really happy with them.

Hope that helps

D'oh!

Re: Czech rifles

I bought my first Czech rifle in 1970. I still have it. It was originally a ZKK 602 in .375 H&H, it is now a .500 Jeffrey. Some objectionable features have been corrected: the "backwards" safety has been replaced by a three position Model 70 style one and the "Weatherby" style stock has been replaced by a more subdued CZ 550 version, but the basic action remains unaltered.

Since then, I have owned a series of M21 and 22 rifles and several ZG 47's, plus one ZKK 600, and several 601's and 602's. Other than the safeties, which I find objectionable, and in some cases the stocks, I find them to be well designed and made. I find the flat bolt handles on the 21 and 22 series to be a step backward from the superior ZG47 bolt handle, as far as scope mounting is concerned, but the small ring receiver and the safety are an improvement. Most of the other rifles have had the safeties replaced before I acquired them.

This half stocked carbine in 6.5X57 is a particular favorite of mine:
