M46 9.3X57 Husky

I have a Husky M46 and as all of them are, the LOP is very long. Too long for me to shoot well. I like my rifles to be cut to a 13.3 or 13.5 inch LOP.

However..........the Husky is 100% original and in very good condition, so I am highly reluctant to cut off the stock and install a new butt plate or pad. I have no reservations about modifying old Mausers that come to me in "already cut condition' but this old gun is as it left the factory.

So I have some choices:

A. sell it to someone who is either a collector, or a shooter who has long arms and likes a 14-3/4" LOP.

B. Say "to heck with it" and cut it off to fit me

C. Look for a stock that I have no bad feelings about cutting off and keep the original stock so I can put it back to 100% in the future should I desire to do so.

D. Makes a new stock by hand with my 13.3" LOP and do it up in a classic style with a large wide butt, cheek piece, pretty diamond inlay in the schnable and a horn or ebony grip cap.

So I thought I'd put out the info and ask if anyone has a stock that needs a home, or if anyone out there is interested in buying and then make an informed decision as to what the next step should be

Either find a replacement stock or make a new one from scratch!
Don't sell or cut up the original stock - something you'll regret if you do so.
There are plenty of "Mauser" type replacement stocks over your side of the pond.

Yeah, I don't want to cut anything on the original wood or metal.

SO I think it's best for me to simply make a new one from a blank.

Agree with the above...save the original

Re: M46 9.3X57 Husky

I am going to be the dissenting opinion. It's a mod. 46 Husky. Not an original Oberndorf sporter. I have three 9.3x57's and love them. But the reality of these excessively fun rifles is that there is not any real collector value with them. I have an all original 1903 MS that is pristine, so I understand your dilemma. But, at the end of the day an all original 1903 is worth $1800-2500. The husky at best is worth $400-600. Modify it to suite your needs and enjoy the hell out of it.

Re: M46 9.3X57 Husky

That is probably true LSHopper, but no old Mauser is highly collectable or valuable....until it is!

The reason they become that way is from people modifying originals and making the ones that are still 100% original rare.

So I still think I will go forward and just make myself a new stock. Stocks for the 96 style actions are fairly easy to make. I can have the barreled action inlet into a blank completely in only one day. I will then do the shaping and turn the blank into a stock that fits me, in the days after between other jobs.

If and when I (or my wife, --- after I am gone) wants to sell the gun, it would then come in 100% original condition and they will get the new stock too.

I think I'll follow the old lines loosely, but make the new stock with a very large butt plate or pad, and add a low pancake cheek piece. I will make a new grip cap and probably inlay an ebony diamond into the schnable. I will follow the lines of the barrel even closer then Husqvarna did at the top edge of the forend. I may checker it on the grip and forend both.

I don't have a lot of "extra time" because of my back-log, but I can "fudge a few extra hours" in the coming year I suppose.

So I made a decision.

I just sawed out the shape of the new stock from a blank of light color banded French Walnut. I will just make what I want.
But thanks for the input guys.

Yeah I thought about a solid pad, but I had the old vented trap pad laying around so I used it. I can always install a solid one later if I just can't get past the "uglies" of the vents.

It's funny. Years ago I didn't mind vented pads at all. This site has changed my perception on design and function in several ways.
Thus I must thank the membership, particularly the gunsmiths as well as well as the members at large for this Re-education.
Thank You

I do agree with Daryl about solid pads. Just don’t like the looks of vented pads. Probably has to do with my love of classic english sxs shotguns.

Re: M46 9.3X57 Husky

Yeah, I actually agree too, but as I said above, the old Large Trap was something I had here, lying around so I though I may as well use it. It does make the light rifle a pussycat to shoot. If I can't face the case of uglies in the future I can always take a large Solid pad and change it out.

But for now and probably for the 1st year of using the rifle I will get by with the vented pad. The wood is French Walnut and very dense. So even though I made it shorter then the original Husky stock it's wider and dense, so it now weighs a bit more then it does with the original stock. As it site in the pictures it's now 7 pounds and 5 Oz. Loaded with PPU 285 grain bullets and a load of 4064 I chronograph the velocity at 2270 FPS. That's enough horsepower for anything we have in Wyoming and most things anywhere. Yet stocks the way I have it, with that ugly old pad, the rifle is a real pleasure to fire and shoots very well.

When I made the trade I was of the mind I was just going to turn the rifle around, and sell it. But having shot it some I fell in love so it is now one of my own hunting rifle. I didn't touch the metal at all. Just made a new stock. I can return the metal to the original stock at any time and just bolt it in.

I think this rifle may become one of my favorite rifles for walking the mountain where we have all the grizzlies and my become another of the "dear ones' for hunting elk or moose. Heck, I see nothing wrong with using it for deer too. I have killed 13 deer and antelope with my 9.3X74R, so I may as well add a few with my 9.3X57s too.

Re: M46 9.3X57 Husky

Good choice for Wyoming, Steve. I liked the way mine shot so well, I'm going yo.get another. Would you mind noting your load please. I went up to 48gr.ofH4895 in mine, as well as53gr. of BLC2 with the 270s.
I stayed at 45gr. with the 285's although.they were showing very low pressures.
Considering original 9.3x62 factory.ammo only did 2,175fps, your loads are more than adequate
I chronographed 45.0 gr. H4895 at 2,176fps with sized-down 300gr. Hormady's thinking they'd ne a super moose load.

Re: M46 9.3X57 Husky

Hi Daryl

My 1st 9.3X57 was the one I made on a Czech 98 action and I was using this load for it, so I just tried them in the M46 when I picked it up, and it shoots them very well. I think pressure is safe, but at the top of the scale for this cartridge if I were to guess. Primers just fill out a little bit and I got .0002" head expansion.

PPU 8X57 brass necked up to 9.3MM
CCI LR Primer
48.5 Grains of IMR4064
285 grain PPU round nose bullet.

Re: M46 9.3X57 Husky

Stock is about finished. That's good, because I may be using it for deer or antelope in the next 2 weeks.

Antelope first, then deer, then elk and then antelope again and finally a late deer hunt in late November.

I have other rifles I want to try too.

A 6.5X54 Mannlicher.
My old 30-30 marlin.
My M98 Mauser full-stock in 9.3X57
My Lee 303 "speed"

I have quite a few tags to fill this season, but more rifles and loads I want to try then I have tags for. I personally have 4 tags now and I am getting 2 more. I will fill our freezers and also I have 4 older friends who asked for meat this year. I will do all I can to help them too.

Dang..........I need more tags------------- and a lot more years and hunts.

That's one thing I really hate about getting old. Knowing that some day I will have to stop hunting.

Re: M46 9.3X57 Husky

First antelope buck down for 2018.
Not big, but it was a fun stalk. He's laying in a gully when I took this picture. 177 yards through the neck. He stuck his head up and saw me before I could get closer, but I had a solid position so I took the shot. 160 grain Sierra Round nose. The bullet looks as if it came apart. One exit hole just a few inches in front of the entry, showing the "blast" turned 90 degrees. The bullet hit the front of the neck bone and dropped him instantly. The other side has a hold about the size of a 50 cent piece, and about 1" away is another hole that looks like a 9MM pistol exit.
Sierras do weird things sometimes.

So now I'll have to use the Husky on some other animal. I still have more tags to fill.

Hey there Iowa.
How's everything corn-country?

All is OK here. Still don't have my 2 4WD vehicles fixed, but I should have the truck back running in a week. The 4Runner may take about 3 to 4 weeks
I had to borrow a truck to go out and hunt this one.

So now I need to get some blood on the 9.3 we made the trade on and also the 303 "speed" I made for myself. I have 2 more antelope tags to fill, and one elk and one deer. If some of the older folks at my church ask for meat I may buy a few left-over deer tags too, and go hunt for them to fill their freezers. I expect this to be an outstanding year for hunting.

Yes I talked to Pat and was told it would be ready last week and shipped Monday. I hope that's true. So if I ship it to you on Wednesday or Thursday I think you'll have it in your hands early the following week. Are there some deer in it's future for you?

Also, I want to let you know I chambered it to touch the shoulder of the case instead of allowing the shoulder to blow forward the way the Brits did it, but it does require you to trim the brass from 2.222 to 2.2 even. If you want a CIP chamber let me know now, and I can set it the way the Brits did it. If you do that you stick with the old standard of 2.222" in case length.

Give me a call when you can.

She did it all herself. Shot was a bit far back, but did the job. She killed, gutted, drug, skinned and field-butchered it all herself with no help at all. She is a real trooper.

I made the rifle for her 3 years ago. GEW length Mauser, 30-06. She likes it and seems to do well with it.

Lancaster, here is a picture of the rear sight. It's a standard type. I made the base myself. In fact I made quite a few of the parts and pieces of this rifle myself. It's a wonderful light little carbine, and it shoots as well as I can shoot it. With iron sights the limit is just how well I can see. I am in my 60s now, and I don't have the "young eyes" I used to, but if the sky is clear I still do well enough with iron sights to kill game.
