Mauser m96

I know most rifles talked about are the m98, but gunsinternational.com has 2 barreled actions under gun parts in the menu for 100.00 a piece. Will post link if wanted

Re: Mauser m96

If the actions are in decent to great shape, they are worth it in my opinion. I would do this with any 96 action from 1912 onward.

Lots can be done to the M96 action. It is a 57,000psi action to start, with standard .470" rim diameter & case size. It was chambered.

Just for a lark, I once rechambered a model 1935 M96 action for the 6.5x68S round.
I didn't run full powered loads, but did push 129gr. Hornadys at 3,200fps.

My factory m96 military 29" bl. helped a bit in obtaining that velocity with 5gr. less H870 than my buddy was using in his 24" bl. His rifle beat my rifle by 100fps only.

Due to it's action length, it would eject only fired cases. The bolt had to be pulled 'slightly' to extract unfired rounds.

If the factory barrels are in good shape, a 6.5x55 Arch or AI would make an impressive long range deer rifle, capable of taking elk and moose as well. Of course at closer ranges, the standard 6.5x55 will do that anyway.

Other chamberings than the 6.5x55's (55,000psi round) in these rifles included 7x58, 8x57 and 9.3x62, all 57,000PSI rounds.

That can be corrected with the Dayton Traister #DSL93 trigger kit. http://www.daytraco.com/

The cock on closing feature has never bothered me, but some guys do prefer to go through the fairly minor machine work of installing the kit and modifying the bot.

Re: Mauser m96

I managed to acquire in late 2015 a Mauser 96 manufactured for Sweden at Oberndorf-Am-Neckar; this military rifle in 6,5x55 was part of the first batch of 40,000 rifles produced in Germany before production was transferred to Sweden. The action, in pristine condition, is marked "Waffen Fabrik Mauser Oberndorf A/N 1899" on the front; to the contrary the bore is in poor shape and the barrel will have to be removed. The plan is to have the action used for building in 2017 a classic light mountain stutzen rifle, most probably in 6,5x55 , 6,5x57 or 7x57. More pictures to follow, but probably not before 2018 as this project will be a long shot!

That does sound like a very interesting project you have. As for the cock on closing, it has never really bothered me. I would love to have one of those in the above mentioned 6.5x57, along with the standard swede. When I came across them, I wanted to make sure to let the members here know

It doesn't bother me either but is a feature of the M96 in original form.

Cool project.

I have an ex-mil M96 wearing some plastic stock and cut off military barrel. Nothing special but very accurate. Primarily as a loaner rifle for any guests.

I also have a walnit partly finished stock for it, moght even be cherry wood, I forget (?). A stutzen would be a cool idea. However for me, I would hang out for an original M-S stutzen if I ever source one.

I have one (a 1939 M-Sch 6.5) here in England, and it is lovely.... Must shoot it more.

Re: Mauser m96

Note that removing these barrels can result in twisted actions, especially on the really old rifles.

Cutting a relief groove in front of the action to relieve hoop stress of the barrel against the action face, can help, eliminating any action damage.

We had a local gun smith, years ago, who used to slip a 2" x 3/8" late of steel up through the mag well, then torque on that with a long bar. He turned a bunch of these nice little actions into pretzels.

I used a standard action wrench with the relief cut in front and the actions twisted off easily with just a small bump on the wrench handle.

Re: Mauser m96

Daryl, thank you for the reminder. The project I mentioned above - which will involve removing the old barrel, will be conducted by a Master Riflesmith; I am therefore fully confident about the outcome. I would love being able to achieve this by myself, as so many Forum members do, but my technical skills are unfortunately limited to rifle maintenance only! Louis

Re: Mauser m96

If you are going to build a rifle from scratch you should consider what the total cost in time and money will be and if you still want to proceed what it will be worth when you finish. A 96 action with modifications to have it cock on opening will be very close in cost to a 98 action. There is a reason why top rifle makers all over the planet use the Mauser 98 exclusively. I have yet to see a $40 000 H&H built on a M94-96 action.
If the rifle is to be thrown in the back of a pickup truck, used as a walking stick or a paddle then any action will do.
