CZ 531

What can people tell me about the CZ Model 531?

I understand it is a rarer model?

Is it still a derivative of the Mauser 98?

The rifle I am looking at is a .30-06 and I would have it rebarrelled to .318 WR. Any comments?

Just part of the never ending project ...

Very nice, but I think it looks too modern for a .318 WR. I like the Mauser 98 look.

I do like like the tang safety though.

Short answer is, don't even consider it. Apart from having 2 front locking lugs, this thing is nowhere near a 98.

I'm not keen on the bolt shroud - looks to be a bit large for the action. It is slightly taller than the rear of the action and has huge clearance for the bolt release lever. Looks like they use this across a few models. I wish they would produce the smaller shrouds like they had on the 602.

No, not interested in using it. I want a normal Mauser 98 looking action, and a working rifle such as a Parker Hale, Mark X or similar, in .30-06. Rebarrel and use it as is until restocking and other work can be done.

Re: CZ 531

The best piece I have seen written on the CZ 531 was by Pat Quin in the April-June 2010 issue of Guns & Game entitled "Model 531 - CZ's Edsel". I would have to agree with him on his assessment that it was not worthy of the Brno name and barely worthy of the small CZ logo stamped on the left receiver wall.

I agree that the .318 deserves a proper Mauser action.
