Japanese Arisaka Sporters

In the thread "Mauser Rifles at Auctions", Lancaster posted photos of a Jap Arisaka Type 30 sporter built by Bieber/Kronach. That rifle is not half bad.

That got me to thinking: Is it possible to build a nice sporter using a Type 38 or Type 99 action? If a decent rifle can be built on a Mosin Nagant action, then an Arisaka should be feasible. Something like a Type A Mauser, or a Westley Richards maybe????

I know it would be a challenge, but if there are any good examples out there, lets see them.

Yep, a challenge. I have one on the back burner list to build into a nice rifle, but have not done anything yet. Might be too challenging!

Shown with an 1909 Argentine:

So what would be the "Classic Cartridge" for this action?

You would be able to get some impressive velocities out of the Arisaka being the "king" of rifle strength! P.O Ackley did some pretty out there test & he couldn't blow one of these up from memory!
My father in-law had one made into a .243, sadly it was loaned many years ago - but never returned.
I reckon the .300 Savage would be great round to do on the action.
Certainly a challenge, but it is the action with the least parts - including a safety if I'm not mistaken!

Hi,
I had a nicely sporterized one in 7x57. The only let down was the trigger, but I believe Timney make a replacement for them. It made a lovely light stalking rifle, and was more than accurate enough to take any game suitable.
I renamed it 275 Ligby.

Caliber? 7x57 is good. How about an 8x57 necked to 7mm, keeping the shoulder in the same place. I figure it would have maybe 5% more capacity than the 7x57 Mauser. I think I shall call it the 7x57 Shekarry! It would be the best thing since pre-sliced bananas.

Re: Japanese Arisaka Sporters

Many 7.7 Jap rifles had their barrels set back and re-chambered for .308 brass and .312 bullets to ease finding suitable components. Thailand after WW2 had captured Arisakas done up in 30-06,the NVA in 7.62x39 and a batch of 7x57 for Mexico [which they neglected to pay for] so didn't receive the second shipment. Many 38's done up in .257 Bob or a 6.5 version of the above retaining the original barrel.......Harold

It's rather funny that you should post this advertisment.
That is the one I sold, the 275Ligby.
For someone who wants a cheap stalking rifle it's a steal.

Re: Japanese Arisaka Sporters

Years ago a friend of mine had an older brother who built a 220 Swift on an Ariska action, I don't remember what the original caliber was. I don't have any pictures of it but I wish I did, it was a really slick and sweet rifle. I think you could build just about anything on one and not have to worry about the action blowing up.
P.O. Ackley did do pressure testing on all the main battle rifles used by both sides of the second world war. They started by doing overloads and quickly moved up to multiple projectiles. Then they started thinning the barrels down just to see what would happen. He managed to blow up all the actions except the Ariska, and if I remember correctly, it finally blew the barrel out of the action but the action held up. Bob
