Mauser Type A in 9.3x62, thoughts?

Gentlemen,

I came across this Mauser Type A in 9.3x62. I'm falling in love with it and I'm kind of hoping one of my fellow NE members can talk some sense into me. Does $8,450 seem reasonable for this refinished Mauser?

http://www.bellandcorbettoutfitters.com/Mauser_Type_A_9.html

I like the lines and caliber but I really know nothing about original Mauser rifles. Any flaws or warnings signs?

Any feedback would be much appreciated.

Best,

Rell

Somehow "refinished" brings a bad tast to collectors. Especially if we talk about US made guns like Winchester, Colt, Marlin etc. I still remember I had a Colt Lightning Baby Carbine in .44wcf with British proofmarks and it was refinished. Nobody wanted even though 99,99999% of the original gun was still there and in sharp condition with rifling, action, wood, markings etc.
The collectors marked is also a speculative marked, which is influenced by business cycle and moods.

As for your Mauser Model A. How many will you ever find?. They are not like some Winchester models that were made in the 100000-1000000s of. Continental & British made hunting rifles/shotguns in general doesnīt suffer a priceloss when refinished as US made guns if you are thinking in investments. If you like Mausers in general that refinished Model A will do you good and in the gun is in overall good condition where you can do hunting/shooting throughout your life well into the next generation. You donīt have to worry about a tiny nick/scratch and you "investment" have dropped 60-80% of value.
Some guns is so rare and desirable that if they show up you better not pass up refinished or not. That Mauser Model A in refinished condition is still a Mauser Model A. It will never become a LC Smith or Mossberg. Buy it if you like Mauser.

The only way I could justify $8450 for this rifle is if it was in original condition with matching numbers. This Mauser is neither. I would advise that you pass on this one and wait for an original.

Oh hell yeah!!!

A very nice piece, but a way too much for me as far as outlay. Just my opinion, but if it were 1/2 of quoted price then that it would be a far more realistic price.
See what they will go down to - no harm in trying!

I doubt the magazine box is matching numbers to the rifle.

This gun has been on the market for at least five years. The pics are beautiful. Nice rust blue finish, express rear sight. The wood was stained dark and you can see some dents were filled. The front sight hood is missing. The price is excessively high for a gun that would not be considered by a serious collector. When a rare gun needs to be refinished it is because flaws such as pitting or scratches need to be eliminated. I would approach such a gun with caution. What is the condition of the bore? You see only what the owner wants you to see. Not worth half the asking price in my opinion.
I have seen a square bridge magnum MauserType A in .404NE sell in that price range.

I've been attracted to that rifle myself in the past. It's been for sale for at least 2-3 years, possibly longer. I like the dark wood and the quality of the restoration. However, it's priced close to what a pristine unrestored original would fetch, if there were any pristine originals around. I'd suggest you call Bell and Corbett and get the full story - who did the work, condition of the bore, etc. If you have the serial number you can check to see if it's in the Griffin and Howe research database. If it is a report might (or might not) provide some interesting information.

On the question of well restored rifles v originals with character, I've gone around and round and finally concluded that I like both about equally well.

By the way, original pre-war Mauser sporting rifles, especially the Type A, seem to be holding their value very well. Just about everything else, including G&H, Hoffman, etc. has reverted to 2004 prices or below. The lines and feel of the mausers just can't be beat in my opinion.

As someone else said, if you like what you like, you have to be prepared to overpay for it.
