Mauser custom rifle. "The 110 years 9,3X62 celebration proje

OK, I admit it. I am a gun nut!
I have always preciated nice bolt rifles shotguns and double rifles, but the only bolt rifles I have owned so far have been customized factory rifles like my Ruger RSMs. I don't mean that my rifles haven't been good enough, but there has been something missing.
They all miss "soul"..

The easy way to get a nice rifle with "soul" would be to buy a nice hand made custom rifle from a good gunsmith or, if I were "loaded", order one from Rigby or one of the other "well known" manufacturers.
Well, I'm not loaded, but would still like a nice rifle to carry in the bush. You know, "life is too short to hunt with an ugly rifle"

After years of thinking, wishing and more thinking I decided to do something about this, and since I can't afford an expensive custom rifle or a "best gun", my solution was to "build" one my self...

My choise of action for this build ended on the legendary Mauser 98 action, and a Lothar Walter barrel in 9,3 chambered for the excellent and very versatile 9,3X62, a caliber with a longer history in Africa than the 375 H&H. I also bought an exhibition grade walnut blank. I will get back with further details on the metal parts as trigger, safety, iron sights, scope mounts, floor plate etc.

This was never ment to be a post here, and i didnt take too many pictures during the progress of my work but I took a few to keep as memories. So- here is a few pictures I managed to take during the last months.

Thanks for sharing Alf.

Nice tribute. The first Mauser 98s from Otto Bock were also small ring recievers.

Nothing more satisfying that doing these projects yourself and then to have it resting gracefully over an animal brings home just what you have achieved. Well done but one question is are you going to knock back the shine a little?

VonGruff.
I am aware that the stock is kinda shiny now but that is because I am still pore filling with tungoil. I put on thick layers with tungoil and then wet sand the stock again and again. I will continue with this until I'm satisfied.

I have worked with this project for like 11 months now and I totally lost patience and just had to use the rifle before the hunting season ends for the year.

As soon as the season ends I will do the checkering and then put on the final layers with oil/wax.

Keep at it - I have done the same, taking time out from finishing a stock just to hunt with it.

Well done, you must be very satisfied with how it has come out, and in a classic cartridge.

Rino,

excellent to see the photos all in one sequence.

You're work exceeds anything I could do.

Lovely 'homemade' rifle you will no doubt be proud to hunt with. Just don't let any clients get their grubby mits on it. I'd like to see a photo of the rifle with a Norwegian moose one day.

Guys, Rino also shoots a 9.3x74R double rifle so he has the 9.3mm rifle range well covered.

I think it is about time to start to think about the checkering.

If you have any ideas about or a picture or two of a nice pattern, please show.

Great looking rifle, I know what you mean about being impatient to use your rifle between getting work done on it. My Mauser metal in 416 Ruger is stuck with a smith at the moment while I work on the stock. I keep getting the rounds out of the box to have a daydream session, but it just gets more frustrating!

Gentlemen.
Finally my 9,3 project is finished.
Thank you for your support during the building process.
If I don't respond, I'm gone hunting....
Merry Christmas and God bless...

Re: Mauser custom rifle. "The 110 years 9,3X62 celebration proje

A small update.

I have used my rifle for a while now and the recoil pad I had mounted started to show serious signs of wear. It must have been made of an old mattress or something.

I tried to get hold of a red Decellerator, but in norway they seems to be just as common as "chickenteeth", and I started to look for other options.

So.... After a cigar and some thinking I decided to try to make one my self, that hopefully will last for a while.
After a few hours work, some frustration, a couple of more cigars, some swearing and even more thinking the result was new pads for both of my new built rifles.
