9.3x62 Mauser Stutzen by DORLEAC

I haven't posted on this Forum for some time; work and…hunting are the cause!
Here is a rifle built to meet the requirements of a client and friend who hunts in the forests of Eastern Europe.
It is a 9.3x62 "Stutzen" [stocked to the muzzle as our English friends say] with a 22" barrel fitted to a commercial pre-war Original Mauser action that left the Oberndorf factory with a rear square bridge slotted for Mauser own rear claw mount fitting.
The customer wanted two different scopes on a single claw mount, an exigency that was a challenge. He also wanted to keep the original flag safety while needing a side thumb safety for scope use.
Indeed the iron sights had to be perfectly regulated for two different distances using 280 grains loads.
To scope that stutzen we have mounted a Zeiss HT 1.1-4x24 with illuminated reticle and a vintage Swarovski AV 3-9x36 R4A.
The rifle had to be fully blued while we had to embellish it with a discreet classic engraving, a job that Florent Viale, our engraver, did masterfully.
I won't go into more detail about this realization; the pictures are a better way for that.
Even if it retains our usual style, don't forget that it has been designed specifically for continental hunting.
I know that this does not correspond to Anglo-Saxon standards and that some will be quick to dislike a specification or the choice of optics, but the important thing for us is to satisfy the client's request by doing our best.

Beautiful rifle. I don’t know how it could possibly be any better. The engraving is also first rate - tasteful and elegant, reminiscent of Kornbrath or Swenson and, if anything, better.

Joel, that's really beautiful. The engraving is exquisite. The styling the always perfect Dorleac look.
A full length stutzen 9.3x62 is often an excellent choice. A 22 inch barrel makes an excellent length not handicapping the x62.
My semi Anglo eyes, not by genetics but by country, doesn't seem unsuitable. The large scopes often put on dainty rifles by Europeans, this one has a very suitable 1.1-4x variable I'm guessing for driven game. And the 3-9x for high seat hunting. Two different scopes make a lot of sense on a rifle. A low power for quick close shooting. Higher powers for precision and longer range. I'd love a choice of scopes on some of my rifles.
That long sleek stutzen looks perfect with open sights as well.

It is actually amazing how tightly one can group with a low powered scope.
I sure like the looks of that rifle with small objective lens scope.

My next project rifle, will basically/outwardly be the same as this (but with a Brno ZKK-600 action).
The main other difference will be, I hope to be able to obtain, a locally made Octagonal barrel.
This would be with a full length integral rib, that steps down just forward of the 1/4 Rib, to be just above the octagonal, and then rises back up, for the front sight base.
D'oh!

Cool picture, painted, Homer. Hope it happens.
I have a couple 9.3x62's, but the ammo is not interchangeable.
One is on a sporter Oberdorf action and the other is on a Mark 10 Mauser action. Neither one is anything to look at, but shoot well.

As you suggested mate, some rifles are for appreciation (and the occasional walk and shot, on a nice warm sunny day), and some are working Tools.
The animals we hunt, don't know if they were just shot and killed, with an battered old War Horse, or a brand New, "No Holds Barred" Mauser/Rigby ........ but we do!

Sincere congratulations on this - as usual, stunning piece of work, Master Joël !
The 9,3x62 is gradually becoming the must-have caliber in Europe, and I wish it the same success internationally. European ammunition manufacturers have worked a lot on improving this caliber, once reserved to medium to heavy game; now with a bullet range offer extending from 184 grains (RWS Eco Green - MRD 182 m) to 325 grains (Norma Oryx) one can foresee hunting any piece of game on earth with a 9,3x62; in addition Norma also manufactures ammunition with solid 275 grains bullets. Hats-off Herr Otto Bock!

Hello Mr. Dorleac,
A work on perfection. As usual!! I am not a Stutzen fanatic but this is one I would live with forever!!!
Its 22 inch barrel is, also to me, a good length for a 9,3x62. Another reason I like this Stutzen!!!!
Love the classic rose and scroll engraving!
One question: was the action from an original 9,3x62 Sporting Mauser? How many rounds in the magazine?

Agree and make mine Louis words about the 9,3x62 versatility! For my uses, the 220 and 250 grains bullets loaded at safe full pressures-velocities are perfect!!

Action is an original pre WW2 type B commercial Mauser, fully blue printed for the 285 grains 9,3x62 round.
Magazine can hold five cartridges but we have limited its capacity to four to get a slickest action.

How do you engrave a finished action? Do you anneal and then re-heat treat or can you engrave the action as-is?

As usual, beautiful and masterful work from Joel.
I did have a chuckle over your 'disclaimer' last sentence. Although I spent a year in old West Germany back in the early 80's hunting and shooting with a variety of guns, some Ferlach bespoke, I could never really come to grips with some of the scope choices and setups on my friends rifles and to be honest I couldn't see that European hunting was overly different from what I had been used to here in NZ, albeit we use spotlights for night shooting.
I did one driven hunt in Germany and plenty of hochsitz hunts plus a bit of forest sitting and stalking. I have used all these styles in my own country at various times using average type scopes QD ring mounted as low as possible.
Anyway each to his own and as you say, you build to customer wants.
Just a thought and question, would you or have you ever refused to undertake a customers styling or fitment request on a bespoke gun? Obviously the customer generally gets what he wants and is prepared to pay for but a bespoke gun and accessories is a reflection of your work and presumably you have a standard or boundary where you would not be comfortable compromising your reputation on?

9.3x57 => To answer your question: when the action is blue printed it is prepared for engraving.
After the work of the engraver the action is heat treated.
Currently we prefer to use the induction technique that allows a differentiated treatment of stress areas.
eagle27 => In fact, this is not purely German ergonomic research, but the avatars of a tradition that dates back to the early beginnings of hunting scopes.
They were then fragile instruments that required a quick detachable mount most often combined with a tunnel allowing the use of iron sights.
Then the practice of twilight shots led to the choice of large diameter lenses (56mm) and this has almost become a tradition.
When it comes to our approach to customer requirements, we believe that it's our name that is engraved on the rifle and we don't allow ridiculous manufacturing options that could damage our reputation.
Generally those who come to us know our sober and not flashy manufacturing style ... and that's why they come to us.
Moreover, we are a very small team and we cannot satisfy all order requests without compromising our rifles reliability and quality.
We are not artists, just simple craftsmen loving our job.

Someone is a lucky duck. I admit I have not hunted eastern Europe but I have been lucky enough to hunt Southern Sweden. Moose, Wild Boar, Red, Fallow and Row deer and of course Fox. I think unless a bears "gonna get ya" the 9.3 is a little heavy. But if someone threw it my way I would be forever grateful
