Kettner interwar catalog african model

a Franz Kettner cataloge page showing the tropen or africa model and I am sure this was not the original mauser but something that Kettner produce in the own factory in Suhl
also showing a special safety for rifles with scope

I always am reminded of Harald Wolf's Jungle Rifle project by these Africa and Tropical models.
A question is why the full wood rifle was considered better for hot and tropical environments?

What was the date of the catalogue? Pre WW1?

The old wing safety - parallel development in the US & Germany.
Lovely piece of kit
What would the thinking be around the longer stock fore end, possible shooting over logs, trees etc so that the barrel doesn't touch?

you have to read - its all in the headline. usual opinion about the africa model is that it was a long barrel rifle only because of the sight line before 1914 when scopes where not possible or to delicate for a safari.
this had some after effects into the 1930s, maybe because the rifles looking so nice or people where still believing they need the long barrels because it was so 20 years ago.
anyway, this concept was gone after the second war and I think it was outdated in the 1920s.
this impressive pattern of the mauser factory was copied in france
the original african model (70 cm barrel )
the french Rival mauser (72 cm barrel)
and as we see here also by Suhl gunmaker like Kettner. the cartridges were probably the usual suspects, 10,75x68, 9,3x62, 8x64, 7x64, I only have this page

There must have been a mini industry in Suhl with various gunmakers turning surplu 98 actions into "African" models to survive during the interwar years. Ozgunsales recently had a Stogos (Stoltz & Goessl) version (complete with bayonet lug)

the link don't show the rifle anymore, do you have the pics? would be right here in the mauser archive.
the 1920s were bad years especially for gunmaker so they made you what ever you want.

I will agree many other makers offered models relatively similar to the Oberndorf offering, I have yet to see one out of suhl with a handguard or barrel band though, I quite like most of the Suhl renditions.
The safety mentioned is a Kettner development, but not like a US wing safety, it rotates on a different axis, they are quite unique, the zg47 later used a similar method.
