My madman birthday fantasy - the SEvHAHN :)

Revealing a long term madman fantasy of mine.

I often rile against new re-invent the wheel cartridges designed only to sell more rifles to people not understanding an almost the same cartridge was created a hundred years earlier. OR merely to add to the Remchester stable, a cartridge only a tiny bit different to a much earlier European cartidge which performed perfectly.

So it is extremely hypocritical for me to reveal a secret fantasy to do the same!

I have long admired the thought of a 7mm Super Express vom Hofe. A fast velocity effective 7mm cartridge, for plains hunting, mountain hunting, and all round medium game.

Now it hit me this week, why not a new range of cartridges, the "Super Express von Hahn"!

The "von" is German for "of". The "Super Express" is of course denoting fast.

10.75x73mm SEvHahn/.404 SEvHahn
Now take the .404 Jeffery case, give it a new shoulder angle, keep it simple and basic. No other changes.

Perhaps increase the capacity to rival the 416 Rigby(?). Perhaps short enough to function in a standard length Mauser 98 action ?

With bullets from 257 grs to 450 grs, a real speedster and versatile rifle suitable anywhere in the world.

9.5x73mm SEvHahn/.375 SEvHahn
Why not? Every pretender range needs to challenge the .375 H&H Mag! See the .375 Dakota for performance. Projectiles from 235 grs to 350 grs.

8.5x73mm SEvHahn/.338 SEvHahn
I have secretly longed for a .338 since 1982. A key item in a range of takedown options planned for in 1983 or 84. Never happened. Since then the .318 WR, the original before the .338.

Neckdown the .404 SEvHahn to .338. Same shoulder angle. Ignore the similar fake news .330 Dakota.

Incredible versatile range of bullets, at super express velocities, from 150 grs to 300 grs.

I have not needed a .338 since acquiring a 8x68S, which with lesser ranges of bullets available, does the same anyway. But this is one of the first two I would do.

7x73mm SEvHahn
Lastly the 7mm. A hotroad on the .404 Jeffery case. But an ideal super express medium game plains rifle and mountain rifle in a light enough rifle.

Of course all the Super Express cartridges need a 650mm/26 inch barrel. And ideally in takedown modified M98 actioned rifles.

Please be indulging in my mad birthday fantasy probably never to happen project. Now it just needs the $40 mil lotto win tonight and the $250,000 project WILL happen.

What an idiot! Already done by Jeffery!

Quote:

In 1908, W.J. Jeffery & Co created the .333 Jeffery by shortening the .404 case, giving it greater taper and necking it down to .333 in (8.5 mm).[5] In 1913, Jeffery further necked down the .333 Jeffery to .288 inches, creating the .280 Jeffery.

John,

Unfortunately, you are looking at your new 7mm cartridge wrong. You need to ignore the fact that WJJ developed that cartridge in 1908. As you know, all the major companies overlook the facts that their new wiz band was previously invented, though maybe slightly differently.

This is 2021 and you can bring out your cartridge using 0.284" bullets with new powder and have a super cartridge. Obviously the different bullet size, different powders and operating pressures will allow you to claim this as a new wiz band.

As you said, you just need to win the lottery. Keep playing.

I do like the idea of a .338/404. As you know I have talked about a .318 WR for ages. Money has been an impediment as is sourcing a donor rifle. The .318 WR is a .330/06, well almost an '06. This might still happen. Need a suitable CZ or other .30-06 to rebarrel when the $$$ are available.

But a cartridge with a .338 bore is so much more useful these days with a much greater range of projectiles available.

I also have resisted the idea as for hunting, I can do it anyway with my 8x68S.

But a .338/404 does have and has long has a great attraction.

A really quick solution would be a custom barrel for a Mauser M03 in .338/404. If it fits in the .404 magazine, and feeds OK, BANG, It could happen.

Allegedly there are one to three custom barrel makers for the M03, I have been told. Nothing on their websites though. What their prices are, I don't know. Will enquire.

Add a 7mm/404 for the same, and I would have all three, 7mm, .338 and the original .404.

"All men dream, but not equally. Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds, wake in the day to find that it was vanity: but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act on their dreams with open eyes, to make them possible."

T. E. Lawrence

Was just dreaming of a re-bored 8x68S M03 barrel to .338 / 8.5 mm. A different 8.5x68 mm SEvHahn. Quite possible if a 8x68S was available in 650 mm length. And if it could be re-bored.
