Takedown Mauser (homemade)

This is an example of what happens when you are told to stay at home so the virus won't get ya. It started out life as a donated Spanish 93 small ring action, mated with a $40 Howa 7.62 X 39 barrel and a NOS Fagen stock.I added ,040 to the extractor hook and made a block for the follower to lift the shorter cartridge into the bolt face. I had to make a bushing for the barrel as the Howa barrel was a little smaller, it is still in the white I am still finished up the little things and should be ready to take it to the range as soon as the forest service lifts the fire restrictions.
I think this post needs to be moved the gunsmithing section I did not look before posting

Brilliant indeed. Fun little gun, for small deer too. I see no sights and not drilled and taped yet.

I used the 93 follower and added a wedge shaped block with a radius in the top, at the front of the follower about an inch (25cm)long. I glued it in place with some epoxy. The shorter cartridge will feed ok until it gets to the feed ramp then it needs the back lifted up so it engages with the bolt face and extractor also then gives it a straight line feed into the chamber.

Most excellent Rolland. I bet it will not have any felt recoil. I have been having a great time shooting my CZ-527 in x39 last few days.

Thanks again Rolland, I have seen a lot of these x39 conversions and this is a very clever feed solution. Is this a single shot or does it work with 5 rounds?

Good point, yumastepside. Likely only a 2-shot, but, hard to say. The angled rounds due to the riser, might just give the angle needed. A block in the rear of the magazine might have been a more normal modification for the shorter rounds.

Nice job! Is the barrel the only engagement to the action? Some early takedowns had a plate on the back of the forend matching that of the action.

Great project Rolland. Well thought out magazine as well. If it shoots as well as you hope it will, you can always retrofit a CZ straight feed mag into the well.
Straight feed mags are so much easier to work with.
Take a look at Gun parts corp under Heym parts. They bought out all sorts of parts from older bolt, combo, and DR models. Plenty of sites, bands, etc for less money then is worth putting into them to make yourself

Thought I might add what I have found to be a better solution to the magazine problem, the system I first used worked ok but feeding was still a problem as the third cartridge would not feed properly. I had thought of using an AK or AR magazine but too much metal would have to be removed from the box. So with that thought in mind I went with the follower from the 7.62 AR magazine and shaped it to fit and shortened the spring to fit in the well and added a block (thanks Daryl) to keep the cartridges forward and centered on the follower. It now will hold 4 down and feed and eject I might get 5 down if I cut the spring but for now 4 is enough. Now a new bolt handle and safety and should be good to go.

Finally got everything finished new bolt handle, Timney safety, scope bases, and hot blue finish. The whole project was less than $200 as I had lots of parts and pieces laying around did purchase the barrel and safety.

Just as soon as the forest service lifts fire restrictions. we have not had any rain for a few months and things are dry. All the ranges are closed.
I am also interested in the repeatability Just for grins I may put a front sight on it and pick up a peep site for the rear base, just in case the scope was damaged.

All my rifles are takedowns. With an ingenious tool, a screwdriver, I can separate my rifle into two
shorter sections in minutes. The added advantage is complete access for cleaning after a hunt. No compromise in strength or accuracy!
