If I remember correctly he was shot right through the mouth by the German sniper..

Beautiful rifle and WR have a way of presenting it in just the right light with just the right props!
I love the rifle Selous is holding in the photo at the beginning of the post. Is it a .461 BP rifle?

I've studied that photograph quite a bit.
To my eye, it is a W.J Jeffery Farquharson with a full rib Krupp barrel as they used on some of their 303 Farquharson rifles.
The signature obscures the muzzle of the rifle so hard to say if it is a 303 or something bigger but it is a dead ringer for my old 303...

I respectfully disagree.
That particular rifle is a Jeffery. No Gibbs Farquharson was made with a ribbed or quarter ribbed barrel and the forend is unlike any Gibbs Farquharson.

The .461 is in fact a Gibbs. I have held both it and his ( Selous') 256 H&H. A buddy of mine loaded ammo for the current owner.

His 461 was in fact a Gibbs - no doubt about it.
The rifle in the photograph is not his 461 Gibbs though. I believe it's a Jeffery like this one.

I agree with Huvius, the rifle Selous is pictured with is certainly not A/N815 which is pictured in the Winfer book and thought to be his .461 Gibbs. The action shaping, safety lever and more do not match up.

On reflection I was probably wrong.The rear sight is very Jeffery aswell.I certainly didn't expect a comment to cause so much anguish.As far as I'm aware,Selous shot with more than one Gibbs rifle and Ive seen sevevral others not belonging to him with Selous plates on.I know the rifle that LSHopper and Bouldersmith are refering to and the action shape is completely different to this one.Apologies Gentlemen.He must have borrowed this one for the photo.

No anguish here, just attempting to get it right and explain why I think what I do.
As a Gibbs Farquharson and F.C. Selous fan, I'm a bit stymied as to why there are so few good photographs of the man.
One would think that his exploits with so many prominent people and his fame, there would be more photos and information on Selous.
One point that actually just came to me is that Selous is quite aged in that photgraph, well beyond the time that he got rid of his Gibbs and was using nitro rifles, from Holland and Holland and others.
Your comment on the Selous plated rifles is quite correct.
There are many (most) which F.C. Selous had no connection to. One reads on the net all sorts of claims about that. Even professional writers have claimed that every one was ordered or owned by Selous himself. My thought is that he must have had at least two made for himself and there are reports that he outfitted some of his staff with Gibbs Farquharsons as well but there is no information as to the configuration or the number of those rifles.
Of course, the advent of the internet has shaken the trees so to speak, so there are so many otherwise unknown firearms of all types coming to light as well as a better understanding of surviving numbers and variants.
