Original Sporting Mausers Intermediate action 7,65x53

Hello,

Because I don't want to interfere in Mr DORLEAC post about his GREAT Mauser Stutzen .308 Win made with an Intermediate action, I show two different markings in respective Mausers Type S belonging to a friend.
One pre-WW I and the other much later.

This is the older one

This other the newer like the one I upload in Mr. DORLEAC post.

Best!

Re: Original Sporting Mausers Intermediate action 7,65x53

Interesting find. The use of a intermediate length action for that cartridge is not really a surprise.
Though the caliber narking 7,65 N Türk seems strange.

The military intermediate 98 actions with that cartridge commonly seen :Peruvian 1909 , Turk 1903 and Paraguayan 1907 differed in the higher Charger clip slot and the halfmoon handle bolt stop.

In Argentina - where you live - you may encounter a Commercial Oberndorf sporter here and there, though I wouldnt call it MANY.

Resembles the situation with the few Oberndorf Sporters in 6,5x55 (Standard length actions). Here and there you can find them in Sweden , but rare enough compared to the rest of production.

Re: Original Sporting Mausers Intermediate action 7,65x53

this is very interesting and iirc, this is very first factory made hunting rifle for the 7,65x53 I have ever seen pics.
think this is an underrated medium cartridge somewhere between 308 and 8x57.
if you have the chance to made pics of other original hunting rifles for the 7,65 argentine ...
wonder where they get hunting cartridges, never see this round in german catalogs - kynoch?

Hello justurious,

Yes! You are right! I said "many" in relation to the total numbers of Original Sporting Mausers that can be seen here, not about the absolute numbers of the 7,65x53 (or 54...).
I will ask Mr. Speed if he has in his Mauser factory archives, some data about the Original Sporting Mauser made for the 7,65 Mauser cartridge.

Best!

It sure would be nice if Norma would do some 9.5X57 (.375 Nitro Express Rimless) at that price.

FM in Buenos Aires made softpoint hunting ammunition in 7.65x53 but not pre war since FM was founded in 1941.
I have a box in my collection, it contains 15 rounds on 3 stripper clips.

Very nice piece of kit there your friend has there PatagonHunter!
And yes a very under-rated cartridge the old 7.65x53!
I think we'd all like some more photos & range details of what this old lady can do - if possible of course.

Hello Iowa,

This is the post I wrote in another forum. See it is needed to repeat here.

"...Our country started to make military ammo in the late 40's. And early in the 60's our government arsenals convert some 1933/1935 Mauser-Werke carabines, a kind of Standard Modell Mausers but with 56 cm barrel length (around 22"), into Sporting Hunting rifles. Using all the military components reworked into a kind of Model C "Armee" Sporting rifles. Late in that period some 7,62x51 (.308 Win) rifles of the same configuration were made, using the GREAT barrels made here on the then new Austrian Hammer Forging machinery, turned into the same profile as the original military 1935 7,65x53 barrels. The last batch of these Sporting rifles were made with actions made here for a contract with Voere. Those actions had the same configuration as the FN 400 actions.
But, back to the sporting cartridges, I show pictures of the only sporting ammunition made in our arsenals for those Sporting Carabines in the 60's:
Berdan primed cases, loaded with 44 grs of our "A27" smokeless powder, made specifically for the then new 7,62x51 ammo, used in our, then, new Military rifle, the F.A.L. This early A27 was VERY similar to the actual R15. The bullets are soft point boat tail 12 grams weight (around 185 grains). These cartridges were sealed as the military ones. Very good ammo! The velocity in those 56 cm barrels is around 2450 f/s. The package was like the one in the pictures: 15 cartridges loaded in that clips. This cartridges are now collectors items."
Here the pictures:

Patagon Hunter, sorry for being off topic, but I have never really considered where you live, in Bariloche, Patagonia Argentina. What a lovely part of the world you live in.

I hope one day to return to South America, and this time visit Southern Chile, Patagonia and also Argentina.

Very nice rifle you have there. I would love to read about what you hunt with it or other firearms on Patagonia.

Re: Original Sporting Mausers Intermediate action 7,65x53

Hello Nitrox,

Yes, indeed! This part of our country is beautiful! I was born in Cordoba, a province in the center of Argentina, also very nice with a variety of landscapes. But Patagonia is another thing. Low people density, great open spaces with mountains in the West, steppes in the center and East. Fantastic rivers with all trout species and, of course many Red Deer, Fallow Deer and BIG wild boars really wild.
Unfortunately the rifles I showed are not mine but of a friend living up north. I have others I showed here and hunt with them. My present favorite, because the cartridge and because the perfect fitting to me, is the BRNO ZKK 600 9,3x62.
Sorry, also, for the off topic. So, to come back to the original one. Another 7,65x53 ammo, the best of all the 7,65x53 our 1909 Mauser rifles ever used since they arrive here before WW I, is the FN military ball ammo we import in 1978. We call them the FN 78. Was purchased by our government arsenals in that year as a fresh ammo because all the former lots made here were expired years before.
This FN 78 was, relatively soon after its arrival, released and sold as surplus to the shooters and members of our Tiros Federales (Official supported shooting clubs originally founded across the country by the Swiss immigrants arrived at the end of the 19th Century). Today, the existences of this ammo is almost dried up. Period. I used it in military rifle matches and still have some 100 rounds boxes.
They are made with the original 7,65x53 Mauser specifications, somewhat different in the rim and head diameters than the 8x57 and .30-06. The 7,65x53 shares these dimensions with the original ones of the 7x57! That FN 78 cartridges have: Berdan non corrosive primers, 45 grs ball powder and 174 bullet, an extreme boat tail full metal jacket of .312" diameter. It is said that the FN made them as match ammo. If not, it should be! Because it is, I repeat, THE MOST ACCURATE 7,65x53 AMMO ever used here!!!! Many shooters-hunters replaced the bullet for 180 grs .311/312" soft point hunting ones without any other change. The quality of the brass is incredible! I have some Berdan RWS primers so I have reloaded some.
Sorry for this long writing...

Best

Re: Original Sporting Mausers Intermediate action 7,65x53

That was great to hear about what you know about the 7.65x53 PH!
For you & your countrymen it seems to have been the 'go to' (mauser) rifle - with us Aussies, Kiwis & Canucks it has been the old .303 in the Lee-Enfield.
The more things change the more they stay the same, we reused the old military cases, grinding back the tips or replacing the projectiles later on when we could afford them!
Same calibre give or take, did a sterling job at whatever it needed to put in the pot!
Keep up the good work!

Re: Original Sporting Mausers Intermediate action 7,65x53

Hello 93x64,

Yes! Our 7,65x53 Mauser was for all porpouses the same as your .303! For many, many years, perhaps since the arrival of the first 7,65 Mauser, the ONLY way to obtain hunting bullets was, also, to grind the point of the full metal jacket of the military ones! In those times and until the 60's and 70's, reloading was almost non existant here.
Best!
