9,3x64 D&D Mauser for Australia
|
The 9.3x64 designed in 1927 by Wilhelm Brenneke was well ahead of its time.
So when an Aussie sportsman asks us to build a rifle for this hard-hitting cartridge we were pleased to try our hands on the project.
Due to the specials dimensions of the 9.3 Brenneke the best-suited Original Mauser action is a 10.75X68 one.
We started with such a pre-war action in near new condition and a match quality Lothar Walther .366" 1/14" twist blank that ended in a 25" barrel sporting our in house profile.
The wide v rear express sight is regulated on a combined moon and fine front bead.
The rear sight banded support bears also the front claw mount base while the rear base is encrusted in the action bridge. The rifle is now fitted with a classic Zeiss Victory HT 1.5-6x42 scope.
A well-seasoned French walnut blank has been used for the classic stock that end with a leather covered butt pad.
The rifle is now in the hands of the engraver before going to slow rust blue finish

Simply outstanding, as we have been used with Dorléac & Dorléac rifles! The always more than perfect blending of steel, wood and exquisite taste. In my personal opinion, among contemporary rifle makers only Westley Richards can in some occasions compete with this level of craftsmanship!

Well I fervently wish that was my firearm being displayed there - unfortunately it is not!
Spectacular piece of kit there Mr D, you are truly a master when it comes to combining fine timber & metal into a such a masterpiece - and in the best calibre to boot!
I hope this will start a trend again for this wonderful old cartridge & more companies offer this calibre.

Not to forget Hartmann und Weiss.
What makes the D&D rifles so attractive in my eyes is that they are a tad closer to the Oberndorf heritage (barrel contour, bolt handle treatment and most often the use of true Oberndorf commercial actions/would really like to know the source !).
Besides the immaculate execution it is the perfect amalgation of Commercial Mauser Oberndorf and the modern / British influenced style to a line you will always recognise as typical D&D that makes a masterpeace.

You are absolutely right, Justcurious. Let's render to Caesar what is Caesar's; I should have also mentioned in the first instance Otto Weiss and Gerhard Hartmann who are also masters of their own. The only reason why I didn't do it is because I am wondering if they are still trading; they have become extremely confidential, it's very rare to hear nowadays somebody saying that he has ordered/has been delivered a new rifle from Hartmann and Weiss, and the only occasions I see their rifles on the market is mostly at Springer auctions.

I thank you for your flattering comments although I consider that they are largely exaggerated.
We must compare what is comparable and in any case we consider ourselves the equals of Hartmann & Weiss or Westley Richards; we are artisans who produce few pieces and when I will leave this job we will have built, at most, one hundred and fifty best quality rifles.
In fact, what interests me is to rediscover Oberndorf's spirit of the pre-war era - the rigor in the making rather than in the presentation - allied to the balance and vivacity of the English bolt rifles of the same period.
For having been lucky enough to manipulate a lot, I consider that the Holland & Holland plains game rifles produced in the thirties and the Scottish light stalking rifles made by Fraser at the same time represented the epitome of the bolt-action repeater.
Add to that some Griffin & Howe or Hoffmann inspiration and especially the simplicity of Rigby Mauser whose mechanics originated in Oberndorf and you will understand where my influences come from.
Of course we have developed a very personal style that is recognizable to the amateurs, but you will note that we are always more concerned about the rigor than about flashy decorations and woods. As far as possible we prefer to use quieter French walnut than unstable bramble, and for mechanisms, whenever possible we select a civilian Original Mauser system.
As for engraving, even if there is now unbelievable art works on the market, I have always considered that it was a bit like binding on a book, regardless of its beauty and quality, it is not the leather binding who will make a bad novel a masterpiece!
That's why I like to present our rifles in the white ... that does not hide anything.
To maintain a small stock of these wonderful pre-war Mauser actions we are often forced to buy complete rifles only to recover the mechanism.
Finally, although we are a small business we have the best relationship with many top-notch gunsmiths, including our friends at Westley Rigby or the Rigby team that has in its ranks many young and talented French gunsmiths.

I have to admit every time I log on, there is a little part in the back of my brain hoping Mr Dorleac will have started a new thread, although I appreciate the workmanship of the heavily engraved masterpieces that are regularly featured here, they aren't really my cup o' tea, it's more the working grade Oberndorf Mausers and Rigbys from between the wars that capture my imagination, Joel's rifles always seem to embody that essence of rifles that are beautiful to look at yes, but more than anything they just make me want to take one hunting, to me they are all a rifle should be.
