Re: Mauser M98 model ID Please

Homer,

It looks like a 1903 Turkish Mauser, made in 7.65 x 53 mm by Mauser in Oberndorf, reworked and remarked by the Turks to 7.9 x 57 mm.

Large ring receiver, small ring barrel tenon, usually very smooth actions. The original actions were similar to the 1909 Peruvian M98, with the intermediate length bolt and the elevated clip charger.

You are very welcome, Homer.

The 1903 Turkish is one of my favorite actions, provided you can find one that has not been neglected.

Essentially the same Mauser, Oberndorf action used on the Rigby pre-WW1 .275 rifles. The original inscriptions were in Arabic script. I have such a 1903 action that evaded the 1930s conversion.

Re: Mauser M98 model ID Please

G'Day Fella's,

Thank you also Kuduae, for that additional information and also, very much appreciated.

I think I have seen one or two of the original's, in 7.65 x 53 and the Arabic script on the receiver ring. This may have caused the confusion I had regarding this particular rifle?
But please, I'm a real fan of 98 Mausers but way under experienced, on the variations.
Thanks to NE, we have you knowledgable and generous people, so willing to give of your knowledge, regarding these and other great firearms.

Best regards
Homer
