Mauser Rifles in the 1939 Stoeger Catalog, Introduction

The 1939 edition of the Stoeger catalog contains nine pages (40 through 48) of Mauser Rifles and information pertaining to them. This offers a 'snapshot' of the options available to U.S. customers at the pinnacle of Mauser Werke sporting arms development and craftsmanship prior to the second world war.

By 1939 Stoeger Arms Corporation had become a major retailer of firearms in the United States. I have posted the covers (inner and outer) and introductory pages of Catalog 31 on a thread of the Mannlicher Discussion forum & Archive titled, Mannlicher Schoenauer in the 1939 Stoeger Catalog.

Here I will share pages 40 through 48 of Stoeger Catalog 31, the '1939 New York Worlds Fair Jubilee issue', which are the Mauser relevant pages.

I'll post one page per entry starting with detail views, then the full page.

We'll start with page 40 - an introductory paragraph titled "Why Genuine or Original Mauser Rifle?" followed by ten paragraphs extolling the virtues of Mauser - Werke product.

Thanks Rothhammer, always a great pleasure to look at these old catalogs and dream about going back to that time with a few thousand dollars in spending money! I'd pick up one each of the K's and A's in the Kurz calibers.....

I guess $150 or so was very hard to come by in 1939, but I'm certain the value of the rifles has outpaced inflation (which is a post WWII phenomenon for the most part).

Does the catalog show the Winchester 70 supergrade? Would be interesting to know how prices compared with the Mauser A.

I own a Type A, in 9.3x62, that was made in 1939. I don�t know if it�s a model 625, 626, 627, or 628. It has a 600mm (23.62�) barrel with a 15mm (.590�) muzzle diameters. It�s a sweet handling rifle that points, for me, like a shotgun.

Thanks Rothhammer1. This is the best catalog I have ever seen on the classic Mauser Sporting rifles. A wealth of technical information. Having owned 50 of these classic Sporting rifles, I know what I'm talking about.

I am wondering if the rifle pictured for the model 626 9.3x62 is a misprint, as the light military style barrel shank was more common to smaller bores like 7x57. Any of you folks out there in Mauserland seen a Type A that looks like the artists rendition of the 626? I think that lighter barrel shank would be cool in 9.3x62, but I�ve yet to see one except in that sketch. I someone out there has one, could you post a pic of it here for posterity sake? Thanks

I have had a copy of this same catolog since I was a young lad of 12 or 13 years.
It has always had a prominent space on my bookshelves.
The pages of the Mauser sporting rifles have always been my favorites.
This would probably explain my long facination with Mauser sporting rifles.

Sho' nuff.

According to usinflationcalculator.com , one dollar (USD) in 1939 would have had value comparable to $17.76 2017 dollars USD. The Model 70 Super with Lyman sight , at $97.85 in the 1939 Stoeger, would cost the equivalent of $1737.50 today. A Mannlicher Schoenauer in .30-'06 would set you back almost twice that, $175.00 in 1939 - $3107.43 today.

I came about it from the opposite angle. I had viewed poor scans of a couple of Mannlicher Schoenauer relevant pages of '39 and '40 Stoeger catalogs while perusing Ebay, decided to buy one to 'deconstruct' for the purpose of scanning and / or framing the MS pages. The first one I got was just too nice to peel apart, so I bought another from which I removed the cover, pulled the staples and disassembled the folio for flat scanning.

I've long been a 'fan' of the Mannlicher Schoenauer pre WW2 rifles and carbines, as my Grandfather had one that he bought in Ceylon while stationed there as a buyer of rubber for Goodyear. The MS was later loaned to my Dad while he was doing 'radio work' on Santa Cruz Island in the 1950s.

This is my Grandfather with his M1910 (9.5X57 or .375 Nitro Express Rimless 2.25") Takedown. I have the rifle, fitted case, and claws of the leopard.

Okay, we're way off the Mauser topic here, but...;

Big Donut was a chain of doughnut shops that once dotted the Southern California landscape.

There was one in Van Nuys at Kester Avenue and Sherman Way, one half mile from where I was born. A girl I knew in High School worked there. It looked just like the one in the photo from the previous post with drive through windows on either side and a walk up counter in front.

Like so many things, they were fondly remembered after having been rendered nearly extinct by time and evolution. Now coveted as fine examples of 'Roadside Architecture', there are a few survivors extant dressed in various livery. The 'Randy's Donuts' in Inglewood is often a 'location' for motion pictures and television productions.

Thinking of this just got me to 'Googling' Big Donut... I'll edit some photos to this post in a few.

Grand opening of the Van Nuys store, 1/2 mile from where I would be born seven months later. Mom liked them, I may have 'eaten' some prenatally.

And the final journey of the (actual) Space Shuttle Endeavour, being towed to a Los Angeles museum.
