Saving an old 7x57 Original Mauser
|
When we acquired this Original Mauser 7x57 she had lost its bolt, some other parts and had no more stock.
The bore seemed good but after cleaning it appeared absolutely perfect.
The double square bridge receiver had an ugly base embedded in the front ring, the job of a would-be gunsmith who had fortunately limited his misdeeds to that part.
The whole thing remained a few years in a corner of the workshop before we decided to revive it.
For the bolt we used a nearly new Mauser made 1909 Peruvian that we modified in our usual style respecting the original look of Oberndorf productions while modernizing it.
The mirror bore original barrel was then set back a full turn and a new chamber cut to CIP standard.
The butchered dovetail on the front flat top has been rectified by the addition of a new TIG welded piece that explains the ostentation of our engraved brand.
Then began the long process of blue printing, squaring, polishing and finishing before we made a special base to complete a new scope mount.
For the new stock we selected an old blank of French walnut of the kind of those used at the time on the productions of high-end special order commercial Mauser sporters. Fairly quiet figure but good grain flow.
Its shape blends our usual style with the more traditional German features.
The Mauser lovers will notice that this rifle benefits of a solid wall double square bridge intermediate length action fitted with the small projection behind the bolt handle to reduce side play.

Very nice indeed. While I am not really keen on your wrist checkering style with the sweep up from the grip-cap - it is beautifully executed & perfectly mastered.
Quite a "save", I'd say. Is there anything you guys can't do?

Fantastic, really elegant, it doesn't look cluttered at all, very slick. The barrel looks really good as well. It looks like a German style rifle without the heavy clumsiness that some of the German rifles can sometimes have. Super, well done again.

That barrel contour was one of the nicest they made in Oberndorf, though with a lot of weight.

I was reading through the description before checking the pics and thought to myself, "why go to that much trouble just to save a barrel and receiver???", then I read the last line! Nice save of a great and not common receiver! And superb work as always!

i have a few that need resurrecting too... are u going to keep it in the white?allways wanted to keep one it the white. beautiful work..... every now and again u guys make me want to take my best rifle and through it in the river.were the bridges forged into the receiver or were they added?

Need light engraving touches and slow rust bluing.
Integral original flat top and square bridge forged receiver.

I forgot to publish the photos of the fully completed rifle.
Here are some pictures after the last finishes, slow rust bluing and traditional bone and charcoal hardening in color for trimmings.

Can I ask about the barrel, is it a 1/2 octagonal & round profile with a full length quarter rib; or was it all machined in one go? There's not the slightest mark to say otherwise - just like your bridge repair!
You have a way of looking at a tired old sow's ear & transforming it into a silk purse.
Amazing workmanship & skill to say the least!

Joel, the rifle looks superb although once again I find it hard to decide which looks nicer, In the white or Blued. Thanks for posting.
