Been on the site for years admiring all the rifles, craftsmanship and wealth of knowledge. This might even be my first post. I'm in the process of sourcing all the parts to build a .318 WR. I pretty much have everything and just need a suitable action. I started of with the idea of using a FN Mauser action, classic lines and been admiring the Dorleac Plains Game .318WR. I sourced a complete ZG-47 in good condition which make a good platform for a custom build rifle. I'm in two minds, and not sure if this is the correct caliber/action combination. Maybe keep it for another project. At the end it is what a custom rifles are about, personal ideas and taste but what would you suggest, looking for a DWM 1909 Argentine? I love the look of the Dorleac 6.5x284 on the ZG47 |

G'Day Fella's, RugerBoy, personally and I'm no 98 Mauser/Mauser Type expert but the ZG-47 may be a superior action, to any of the older 98 Mauser actions, including the 1909 model? I if I had a CZ ZG-47 action and I wanted a medium bore rifle, I might choose the 9.3x62 chambering. Cases, bullets and ammo are a lot easier to acquire, that the WR .318 Accelerated Express! By the way, good to see you participating on this forum. Hope that helps Doh! Homer |

Thanks Homer The 9,3 x 62 sound like the obvious choice for a ZG47, there is already 9,3x74R Ruger No 1 and a custom CZ in the safe. Its true about the WR.318 components, but I have the brass, bullets and dies. Just need the action then we can start the project. |

Hi RugerBoy, The ZG47 is a superb action, perfectly suitable for a .318 W-R plains game rifle. I don't think it's as good as a "A" type Mauser made at Oberndorf in the thirties but it easily surpasses in quality and strength many new made 98' clones. The only minor defects that I reproach to this BRNO system are firstly its magazine construction in two parts including the sheet metal walls - either it must be replaced by a mono-bloc 1909 type magazine, or the stock must be built on pillars - and then, its trigger which must leave room for a modern version like the excellent all steel BLACKBURN or RECKNAGEL ERA single stage. We use these actions to construct cheaper rifles taking advantage of the integrated mounting rails which accept the excellent TALLEY rings because on our "Best Quality" customers prefer either claw mounts or H&H pattern quick detachable side mounts. Do not hesitate to ask us if you need any information. DORLEAC www.dorleac-dorleac.com |

Rugerboy. Go for it. If I were you, I'd visit Steve Fourie, Pretoria and tell him abaout your plans and thoughts. He has been there, done that! I'll be happy to help you get in touch with him. |

Rino Small world, Steve build me that 9,3 x 62 CZ with the tang extensions. We have talked in dept about this project. He is just as excited. Thanks, |

Dorleac thanks for your comments Sir. Been admiring your work for years. Thanks for the advice and I will definitely get back to you if there is more questions. We will defiantly replace the magazine box and trigger. The idea is to build a sort of "light weight" rifle resembling the lines of the original .318 W-R rifles. All the best |

"The only minor defects that I reproach to this BRNO system are firstly its magazine construction in two parts including the sheet metal walls - either it must be replaced by a mono-bloc 1909 type magazine or the stock must be built on pillars..." Could you please explain why this is so? |

|

The problem with two-part sheet wall magazine is that of stiffness. On a ZG47, like on a W70 or many other rifles built with this type of magazine, it's impossible to guarantee an absolutely reliable fixation of the bottom metal because it varies according to the force applied to the screws. To avoid this trouble we have the choice between two solutions. Either we use pillars -a reliable solution that permits to save the original parts-or we replace the magazine with a mono-bloc type like a 1909 model. As for the trigger, the criticism is due to its fixing system and its imprint on the back underside of the receiver. DORLEAC www.dorleac-dorleac.com |

Hello DORLEAC, Good information!!! Thank you! Can you upload it with more resolution, able to read it and/or save it as well. Thank you again! PH |

If you reload, "parts is parts." .318WR brass and loading dies are a bit pricey, but the dies are a one-time expense and the brass will last a long time. If you prefer buying loaded ammunition, there are several vendors who will supply it, and compared to the cost of a bespoke rifle, the price of the ammunition is trivial. |

It's a shame that the CZ550's don't have such a 'nice' bolt shroud such as the ones on the ZG-47 & disassemble down to individual parts! Rugerboy you certainly will have a nice rig when all said & done! The 318WR maybe an odd calibre, but as TRX neatly puts it; if you choose reloading then the cost will be minor overall! Will be nice to see how it turns out & the loads (ammunition) that you use. Yep.....Homer's spot on as always! 93x64mm |

Contenplating a similar build at the moment. I wasn't planning to build anything as I don't have the "need" but this showed up and trying to decide where there may be a gap in my arsenal for a classic calibre.... 318WR, 7X57, 8X68 hmmmmmmm.... |
