M 96 Mauser Greifelt/Suhl

classic sporting rifle from Greifelt with a Mauser 96 action and 60 cm long octagonal barrel in 5,6x61 Super Express vom Hofe.
on the barrel rib stands "Leim & Honstetter Berlin", the action colour case hardened, double set trigger and border engravings, a Zeiss Ziel 6 on a Suhl claw mount
the 5,5x61 Super Express vom Hofe ist from 1937 and this rifle was proofed in the Suhl proofhouse in 1938

I think this would be "Der beste und preiswerteste Gebrauchs-Drilling der Gegenwart" Caliber 12/12/8X60R.

Interesting piece of history , but as a working rifle some sort of a handgrenade.
Max. pressure 65900 psi ! 5,6x61 !
Max. pressure 56000 psi 7x57 (the round the 93 action was made for).
I would never ever fire a single round with that rifle.

I hope it was"preiswert", overall condition looks very good
the mauser rifle is one of the real problems. why the ... did they use a swedish mauser action for making such a fine sporter. not that there is anything wrong with it but M 98 actions were everywhere then. can it be a special order for a gentleman from sweden?

It is indeed a Greifelt drilling, one of two I am proud to own. Manufactured in 1939.
Hard to judge "preiswert", since I traded an original S&W Schofield revolver for it, one which I had bought years earlier at a very reasonable price.
I, too, was intrigued as to why the Model 96 action would have been chosen for such an intense cartridge. I have a reproduction Greifelt catalog which lists a Greifelt bolt action rifle, but only with the Model 98 action featuring calibers 8X60, 9X57, and at an increased price 7X64, 8X64, or 10.75X68. Additionaly two African cartridges were offered, the 11.2X72 Schuler and the 12.5X70 (.500 Jeffery). Although the catalog is not dated, since neither the 7X57 nor the 8X57JS were offered, I presume that the ban on military cartriges in hunting rifles was still in effect.

Appears the Mauser's action has been case hardened in colours. Very nicely done.

Wonderful rifle Lancaster, I really like the scope and mounts too! I have a Zielsechs just like it that I want to put on a O.Geyger made 9.3x62. Mine has the same locations for the lower mounts,just wish I had someone I could trust to do the upper Suhl mounts for me and hand fit them to the existing lowers! Any ideas? By the way,how does your Greif shoot?? Kevin.

I believe the Swedish Mauser is very strong. Even the first ones from Mauser were made with swedish steel. Swedish steel has a natural high copper element and is resistant to corrosion and very strong.
I have seen M-96 Actions barreled in .270 winchester. It was a Swedish company that done this. The barrel was marked Cheetah and proof marked. Even Norma makes a very high pressure load for gunsmith inspected M-96 rifles.
If the M-98 never came around i think we would see the Swedish Mauser in a differant light.
