1960s Steyr Diamler Puch Mannlicher build quality?

Did a search but didn't find anything. Does anyone own one of these late builds and what do you think? Thanks!

Very happy with the 1960 made .243 I purchased a few months ago but don't have an earlier rifle to compare (yet). Mine feeds, functions flawlessly and shoots accurately.

I have a model MCA chambered in .358 Win. - a very rare one indeed.

The build quality is fine, and the rifle is a splendid shooter.

Compared to my early Model 1903 there are stylistic changes, such as Monte Carlo stock design and the white spacers so popular from the post-WW2 era. But the build quality is certainly there.

Not the best photos. Sorry!

If you would like to compare it to my 1903 carbine, go to this link on these forums:

Picked up an MCA recently, for a friends wife. Stock had been cut for a lady. Very nice little rifle in .243. Very nice.

Thank you for the replies! I was hoping the build quality was good.

Both my 1961 MCA Stutzen and 1965 MCA rifle are fully equal in quality to my 1908 although the stocks are a bit more robust.

Re: 1960s Steyr Diamler Puch Mannlicher build quality?

Hello Levallois,

I have seen some pre wars M-Sch and I had for some years a M-Sch GK marked as made in 1964 in 7x64. May be some finishing, polishing and blueing details were slightly better in the pre war´s. Anyway, the fitting of my GK was great!!
But there is a rather BIG difference in the design of the primary extraction between the pre and post II WW Mannlicher-Schoenauers:
Pre II WW: The machining of the primary extraction angled slope was made in the action forward bridge. So, the front end of the barrel chamber is like in the Mausers. To put a new barrel for the same cartridge is relatively easy.
Post II WW: The primary extraction angled slope was machined in a barrel extension.
This is a big issue if the barrel should or wanted to be changed, even for the same cartridge in the Post II WW M-Sch!!! The works on that barrel extension is no a small thing....!

There are a couple of technical changes on the post war models designed to reduce manufacturing costs, and the bolt to action fit is definitely not as good, although its not bad just not as good.

Matt.

Hi Waidmannsheil,

Yes! I think that change I mentioned is the main one. I see it not as good as the pre war setup. About the manufacturing cost and the final fittings, cannot see a big gain. And the barrel replacement, for the same cartridge, was almost imposible outside the factory

I bought an MCA 243, 1963 vintage, about 2 years ago, I added a 1910 a month ago, I can see little difference. I haven’t fired the 1910 yet.
