Stey MCA rechambering

I just picked up a beautiful Steyr Mannlicher MCA .30-06 Springfield. A very useful chambering but not one of my favorites. I am considering having it rebored to 9.3x62mm Mauser. The only issue is the magazine. It will take 2 rounds down but the neck is just a hair to big to allow any more rounds in the mag. It looks like the "fingers" that come up on the outside of the mag around the spool could be slightly Dremeled or filed to alleviate the binding and allow a full mag. Has anyone done this? Were you successful? Is it a stupid idea? I want a Mannlicher 9.3x62 but the cheapest of the 2 factory guns I have seen was over $4000.

While I very much like the 9.3X62, I also think the 30/06 is fantastic & I very much think that reboring a Steyr Mannlicher-Schoenauer MCA in 30/06 with a good to reasonable barrel is not a good idea for many reason !

I think if you were to find a good VZ34 action around for $100.00 to $200.00, then get your parts together, you could build a good 9.3x62 for under $1,500.00.

I would also leave the Steyr Mann. as it is.

It is not quite original but I will take it out Monday and see how it shoots before making a decision

I had my M/S carbine rebored from .270 to 9.3X62. The magazine holds four down. with one up the spout and it feeds flawlessly. The late Jim Dubell of Clearwater Reboring did both the rebore job and corrected the feed.

A company in Austria will sell you a new set of "fingers" for less than 40 Euros. They are matched to the caliber. You could also buy a complete magazine, but that's pretty pricy. mannlich-schönauer.com

Thanks! I have seen the website before but since it is in German I never thought about it again. Tried a web based translator so hopefully I asked the right questions!

Pacecars, you had my dream 9.3X62 by the sounds of it in the Model 21-22 Brno you had, only trouble with the 9.3X62 in a light rifle is the recoil, it can be rough & a eye brow cutter in the light weights with heavy loads & the 9.3 can be very powerful, it does the same work as a .375 H&H no trouble !

I have a Schoenauer a little like yours in 7X64 (wish it was 30/06) it is a great caliber & super accurate, if you use the rifle a bit you might find that working the bolt in a hurry might take some getting used to !

Were it possible, I would swap my .30'06 for your 7x64 faster than a New York second!

Re: Stey MCA rechambering

Considering that your rifle is in very good condition I would be inclined to leave it as it is. There are plenty of MS in 30-06 that in average condition which are good candidates for a conversion and re-barrel.
You can open up the cartridge guide ring on a 30-06 a small amount to fit the 9.3x62 and it will feed flawlessly but a Dremel might be a bit rough, hard to get the finish parallel and square.

Post WW2 models are much easier to convert than pre-WW2 models as they were designed from the factory to be made in a multitude of cartridges with the minimum amount of changes, hence the Cylindrical follower and cartridge guide ring. On your model the diameter of the cylinder on the follower is designed for the size of the cartridge body and the cartridge guide ring is designed around the cartridge neck size.

Matt.
