1908 MS gets it done

I’ve been mentoring a brother and sister from our church who like to shoot and expressed a desire to hunt. I helped them through the drawing process and Sarah drew a cow moose tag. I’ve worked quite a bit with both of them at the range and they are good, safe shooters.

I offered Sarah the use of any of my rifles and demostrating exceptional taste she chose my favorite 1908 MS 8x56. I had it drilled and tapped previously for Redfield bases and topped it with a Leupold 3x.

A week ago after almost two weeks of hunting we found a cow. Her first shot was a touch high, hitting the top of both shoulders and the spinal ridge. The cow was hurt and only moved a few yards and her second shot took out both shoulders and lungs. The round was 70+ year old Western ammo with 200 grain Lubaloy round nose bullets. I recovered both under the skin on the off side. Sarah jumped right in with the skinning and quartering. It was a great hunt. I’m trying to post this from my phone because the firewall at work won’t let me get to this site. I’m at a remote oilfield and have to depend on their WiFi. I hope the photo comes through.

Doesn’t look like the photo posted. My computer doesn’t seem to want to connect to my phone as a personal hotspot either.

Well done Mart. On helping the lass for her hunt, and shooting, and also posting the images and short story.

Lovely to see the M-S 8x56mm. I have one myself finally having only just arrived at my gun dealers.

Great beast and lots of venison for the future table.

Super well done and great that you are helping someone young who may otherwise not have any opportunity. Also good of her parents to allow you to help, often the parents don't want a bar of it even if the kids do. Sarah is obviously a lady of class with impeccable taste choosing that 1908. Nice moose as well. Good on you, that's what hunting is all about.

Matt.

You really hit the nail on the head here, its a group effort & without help & guidance opportunities like this will cease for the younger generations!
Superb job all!

Mart well done on the guidance you provided and a very well done to Sarah. She certainly chose rifle with class.

Good to see the old ammo still working and the recovered projectiles.

Re: 1908 MS gets it done

Thanks guys for all the kind words. The kids have been a blessing to us. It has been great for Etta to have someone around while I’m gone for two weeks of every month. I work in a remote oilfield.

Their parents are all for them hunting and used to take them deer hunting with them as little kids. The dad’s job had him gone too much to develop that as they got older so I got that opportunity.

Sarah is actually moving back east next week to start looking for a job and to be closer to family. I think she’s really torn between family and her love of Alaska. She’ll be taking half the moose with her and lots of memories. I have a hunch she’ll be back.

Job well done, Mart - for both of you. Making a perfect shot with the second one, happens rarely.

Well done Sarah!

Great stuff!

This would also go well on the 'Kills with classic not plastic bolt rifles' thread under the 'Big Bore Rifles' category.

I had that thought but figured the 8mm was a bit skinny for the Big Bore section.

That moose may be inclined to disagree.

The MS definitely has the 'classic not plastic" end covered.

Mart, well done indeed!....Its fantastic to see the younger ones enjoying vintage rifles and hunting.......if you don't mind me saying , I think you might need to get sling mounted properly....she deserves it!!

Best

Re: 1908 MS gets it done

I agree and have ordered Mannlicher sling hardware for it. That was an expeditious way to get a sling on it for this season. I have normally carried it just cradled but we put in so many miles in this year I felt she needed some kind of sling so she could change carry positions from time to time.
