I have been trying to find a Holland & Holland in .375 2.5" for some time now, I was wondering if you guys though this to be in .375 Express or .400/375? Thank you. https://www.gunsamerica.com/941155709/Holland-Holland-Takedown-375-Express-ON-SAL.htm |

It can't be 375 2.5" as the Mannlicher Schoenauer will not feed rimmed rounds. I would suggest that it is chambered in 400/375 as I don't believe that H&H ever made a MS in 375 2.25" Rimless. That rifle has been for sale on Guns International for ever, an interesting good looking rifle for sure but in a fairly used condition with plenty of marks on the stock. The price is obviously too high but I think that they are trying to capitalize on the H&H name. If you do choose to buy, Bertram make the appropriate brass. Waidmannsheil. |

I thought the 375 Express was the 9.5x56 MS ( or maybe x57 ).....I could be wrong... Roger |

The pictured rifle is a Mannlicher-Schoenauer, and listed as a ".375 Express" it could be either a .375 2-1/4" Rimless Nitro (9,5x57) or a .400/.375 H&H, most likely the former. I have owned an H&H Mannlicher in the .375 2-1/2" Flanged Nitro, and a beauty it was, but it was built on an 1892 Mannlicher en-bloc clip action, not the later spool magazined Mannlicher-Schoenauer action. |

Quote: The '.375 EX' stamp pictured here is the same british mark as on my M1910 Takedown (original Steyr system). On mine that is supplemented with the recommended cordite charge and bullet weight of '43 - 270 MAX'. Better photos of the H&H would help to identify. The 'max' stamp appears to be in the shadow above the '.375 EX'. The model number designation on the receiver ring is also not photographed. The 9.5X57, common to all original, non modified, M1910 rifles and carbines has also been referred to, sold, and catalogued as .375 Nitro Express Rimless 2.25" (British designation), 9.5 X 56, 9.5 x 56.7, and others. It was listed by DWM as #531. It may have been designed originally by Westlery Richards for Eley - Kynoch in 1908, though some scholars debate this. DWM MS cartridges listed in 1939 Stoeger Catalog: Here are the Kynoch offerings of .375 from the 1939 Stoeger: |

If you enlarge that photo you can see very faintly 320 Max which was I believe an early loading for the 400/375. The 320 grain bullet was also used early on with the 375 NE 2.5" The MS can however only feed rimless rounds. I believe this one is a 400/375. I have not seen any H&H catalogue pages that show a 375 NE 2.25" on offer, only the 400/375 Belted Nitro Express. Guns International are still listing that rifle at $4599. Waidmannsheil. |

More from the '39 Stoeger: By this listing, '43 - 270 EX' could be stamped on a firearm that eats either the .375 Rimless Nitro -Express or the .400 / .375 Nitro - Express (Holland). This does not seem to match any of them. Perhaps, as Waidmannsheil posited, an earlier load? |

I had a look through my books and Fank Barnes COTW shows a factory loading for the 400/375 with a 320 grain bullet at 2000 FPS with 43 grains of Cordite. Woodleigh also make mention of the fact that there was a 320 grain bullet used early on in their reloading manual. Matt. |
