Mannlicher article - American Rifleman November 1959

First, allow me to acknowledge member Waidmannsheil, as the article was scanned from his magazine.

When this article went to press for the November, 1959, issue of American Rifleman, the flag of the United States bore 49 stars (Hawaii's to be officially added on July 04, 1960), Dwight David Eisenhower was the President, automobiles had fins, and I was a zygote.

The fifty cent cover price was equivalent to $4.33 in 2018 USD (per usinflationcalculator.com), the Mausers advertised therein for under $30 would equate to about $260 today. There are Mannlicher Model 1901 pistols on page 110 for $49.95 ($432.54 today), F.O.B. Burbank.

So here, without further ah- choo, is 'Mannlicher Rifles' by Ludwig Olsen, as printed in the November, 1959, issue of American Rifleman.

Re: Mannlicher article - American Rifleman November 1959

Rothammer and Waidmannsheil, many thanks for posting that article by my late friend Lud Olson! 1959 was a bit before my time of reading American gun magazines, as I was just fighting with the English language in school then. Many years later, in July 1992, Lud published another article, "Mannlicher Turn-Bolt Rifles" , in Rifle magazine. After finding the magzine in my mailbox, I took it with me to read it on a deer stand. After coming to the end I felt a bit pissed as that Mr Olson had called Mannlicher – Schoenauers things of the past. As I contemplated to write a letter, an "edible" roebuck appeared. I took up my Gibbs M-S 1903 and harvested that buck. Yes, I wrote a letter to Lud. This started a friendship that lasted to the end of his life. He once visited me when he was in Germany, but most contacts were lengthy phone calls.Of course, I still have that 1992 article and will try to post it here too. I don't intend to hijack your thread, but I think it's best to have the two articles by the same man on the same subjekt available at one place. The 1992 article contains some mistakes, of course. We did not know then about the two "New Model" Haenel rifles, M1900 and M1909. Lud only knew the M1909 name and three M1900 rifles. So he thought there was one model only. Also, the separate firing pin tip of these Haenels was not meant for easy replacement, but to preclude the rifles being fired without the bolt head, a defect of the M88 Action Lud mentions himself.

'Hijacked'? - quite the contrary!

I feel that your contribution to this thread is a compliment and enhancement to it. I also appreciate the anecdote regarding the deer stand, MS, and your friendship with Mr. Olson. Future readers will likely appreciate it as well.

Some time about 1998 (IIRC), I read a short article in 'Rifle' magazine about Mannlicher Schoenauers by Sam Fadala. I wrote a letter to the editor (the first time I was 'published', I believe) and included a letter to Mr. Fadala which I asked them to forward.

I was living in Northern Arizona at the time and was reloading for and shooting Grand- Dad's M1910 Takedown. In the letter I had told Mr. Fadala of this and of the jackrabbits that were in great abundance. He replied that he had many fond memories of hunting 'jacks' in Arizona during his college days. I invited him to bring his MS and to stop by if he found himself traveling through AZ. He replied that he'd love to, but we never coordinated it.

I have that magazine and his letters around here somewhere. Couldn't find the article online, but I did find this:
