Another English retailed Mannlicher

I thought I would share another of my English retailed Mannlichers.
Comparing it to the day it left CB Vaughan’s Retail premises at 99 Strand, London in the late 1930s it appears not much has changed before coming into my procession more than 75 years later.
I envisage a local purchase, most likely for an intended Stalking holiday in the Highlands of Scotland…well that’s what I chose to believe.
The rifle has clearly been shot, evidenced by some small amount of jacket fouling in the bore as well as a recovered bullet from a successful stalk I located in the bottom of its case. In a way that was the nicest surprise of all. All case items appear to be in place including a rather interesting front sight device. (Pictured below). Clearly the owner wanted to ensure he could pick up the sight quickly.
The case itself has all original straps, handles and fittings and is in excellent condition throughout. On opening the case for the first time I was greeted with that indescribable smell of Young’s 303 oil. It’s interesting how a smell can trigger memories of earlier times.
String pull throughs have not been used (thankfully as they are horrible things) and the neat cane cleaning road is correct and in place. The butt trap still housing the Factory Rod.
It’s a Model 1925 removable stock. The North American followers here will be very glad to see its chambered in the venerable nought 6!!. Proof date is 1938.
Hope you enjoy.

Best
Eric

That is absolutely gorgeous!

My M1910 Takedown has the same serrated cleaning rod in the fitted case (and the set in the trap) but the case is more visibly aged and lacks the inside label.

Paradox,
What an absolute gem! To find a cased rifle in that condition with so much of the small items still intact is indeed a rare event. No extra holes punched into the old gal anywhere either. As a package, it would be hard to improve on. I am very jealous.

Congratulations on your superb rifle, Paradox; this one just escaped the 'Made in Germany' marking by some months!
Best regards.

Thank you. That is beautiful. I'm curious as to your conclusions on the string pull through. Can you tell me why you find them horrible?

Beautiful gun and in such good condition. It is fantastic to see the original case as well which is often non existence or in bad condition. The case and all it's accessories are almost as interesting and valuable as the gun itself, it certainly makes owning the gun so much more enjoyable. Thanks for posting.

Thank you. I have an aversion to them simply because of the propensity of most people to drag the piece od string over the crown.
One might think it hard to believe but I have witnessed visable damage to quite a few SMLE 303s crown in my early days.
Beside thats why the Factory placed that lovley rod in the trap. I should have thats IMHO of course.

Re: Another English retailed Mannlicher

Thank you. It sounds like the issue is improper use, and not the pull through itself.

I've had a great deal of luck with them. They have their place, and my Otis system is very useful. But I can see how mis-using them would create their own issues, and I can see how easy it is to mis-use.

I've seen people bang up a muzzle with a rod, too. The problem with trying to make things fool-proof is that fools are so darn innovative.

That's a nice rifle and a great caliber.

How does it shoot? I would like a range report.

How different is the sight hood of your M1903 from those of the 1950 model?
Could you provide some photos of the hood out of the case?

These are offered on GunBroker as reproduction to fit M1950,M1952, MC, MCA, and MS Zeephyr, but I don't know if they'd fit my M1910:

I have shot this rifle yet, however its working its way to the top of the list!!
I will add here when done, perfect bore, so Im expecting nothing less than the normal high level of accuracy.

Roth, I doubt the front sight hood is correct, I will post a few comparatives in coming days, as well as the one on my Zephyr

Cool.

To any and all, does anyone know where one can find a proper sight hood for a pre WW2 Mannlicher Schoenauer (M1910)?

Re: Another English retailed Mannlicher

Rothhammer, to my limited knowledge pre-WW2 MS were not factory fitted with front sight hoods. None of the ones I own, neither 1903, nor 1905, nor 1908, nor 1910 and nor 1925 has one; in addition I can't recall having seen any pre-WW2 model factory fitted with a front sight hood.

Louis, I think you are right. I recall seeing a post war catalogue reference to the fact hoods were an additional cost item. Perhaps they always have been??
My Zephyr has one and this one is on a Model MC 7x57

Ebay has been my source. I bought one for the purpose of 'deconstructing' it for scans, decided it was too nice to abuse, and bought another. Since I have bought yet another because the condition was better still and the price lower.

There's a beauty on there now for $50 delivered (U.S.), I've paid half that and less for my used copies. If I didn't already have two more than I need, I'd buy it!

Ebay

Watch for reproductions.

Thank you, I am very familiar with the Movie, its very funny indeed.
Roth, my question really is what has it got to do with this thread??. These things are all very amusing, and I do have a sense of humour , however these unrelated postings do have the habit of stopping the conversation in its tracks.
Please dont think me rude, but multiple postings of the same material, and unrelated material such as this belong somewhere else, at least in my opinion.
I for one enjoyed very much your great work in posting from the Stoeger catalogue, its very good related information and im grateful.
Not sure we need to see it again in every reply.
I do hope you take this feedback in the spirit in which its given.

Many thanks

Point taken, and I apologize.

I will likely still post repetitive images from the Stoeger, as they are relevant replies to several posts - especially those of new members or those who are seeking information on a newly acquired MS. I'll try to be more aware of when and where it is appropriate.

I have deleted the 'out of place' posts (those recent enough to delete).
