Mannlicher-Magazine extra finish

I have two examples, one a 1903, and a 1910 ( shown) with this " crosshatching" finish to the magazine base plate.
Was this a special order feature, or just at the decretion of the finisher on the day. Both are identical in the appearance, so Im inclined to rule out an after market addition??
Any one have a similiar examples?

Best

Hi Paradox

Yes, my 1903 has the same finish. I don't know anything about the reasons why tho. I bought my rifle from Holts and I think it may have been one built in the UK. It has some other unusual features too.

The action has the pre-1926(?) name on the side of the action. It doesn't say Germany or Austria on the engraving on the receiver. It has a side safety as well as the flag safety. There is no xxxx.xx number anywhere on the action or barrel. The only proof mark I can find is a crown on top of a V which I think is a London proof mark.

Cheers mate.

It may have been put there by a gunsmith. British, and less commonly American 'smith's, will put this same crosshatching on the breech faces of doubleguns that have been stripped and cleaned. It's done with the narrow edge of a file wrapped in fine sandpaper or crocus cloth.

Just a little touch that shows attention to detail.

I have 1903, 1905, 1908 and 1910 models of Mannlicher Schoenauer, all pre 1926 and none of them have this decoration.

Paradox. Just have a look at the MS 1903 for sale on Joel Dorléac's website http://www.dorleac-dorleac.com/arme/mod1903-english-rifle/?lang=en; it looks to have the same finish as yours on the magazine base plate. Probably a finish favoured by British resellers for their customised MS rifles.

Thanks for posting that link Louis, that's a very beautiful rifle. Simple yet elegant, very classy. It is hard to get much better than that I reckon, and with my favorite swing of mounts to boot. Super.

My 1924'ish has the same treatment. And as far as I can tell is 100% original.
