ARMY & NAVY 1910 Take-Down Rifle
|
Interesting first year of manufacture Mannlicher-Schönauer mod. 1910 rifle delivered by Österreichischen Waffenfabrik-Gesellschaft Steyr to the Army & Navy Co-operative Society, Ltd.
It's the first export model for the English market, fitted with a 24" barrel bearing specific sighting devices with two wide V leaves rear sight and banded front sight backwards one inch of barrel mouth.
Like all mod. 1910 this rifle is chambered for the 9.5x57 M-S known also as the .375 Rimless Nitro Express.
The rifle is built in the so-called "take-down" version or more precisely "detachable stock", an ingenious disassembly system that has the advantage of retaining the original headspace while reducing the length of the assembly to that of the stock. This system was immediately adopted by Westley-Richards in 1912 and then by H&H, which used it continuously from the 1920s to the present day.
The 14¼" LOP stock is in good European walnut, it retains its original steel curved trapped steel butt plate while the black horn grip cap unlocks by pushbutton uncovering a reserve in which a spare bead front sight is preserved.
The whole rifle retains the majority of its untouched factory finishes and the almost unaltered bluing on the bolt head is evidence of moderate use and extremely low number of shots.
The rifle lies in its original leather and canvas case with vintage label.

Is it destined to be a personal rifle for you, a Dorleac "museum" piece, or for resale through your shop?
In any case, thanks for posting the description and photos.
One day it would be nice to see, in detail, exactly how the takedown mechanism of these rifles and the WR takedown mechanism was done.

Very nice. My 1903 takes down the same way. I read an article a long time ago that said this takedown system was a modification done by the English gunmakers when they received the barreled action. Of course this is not true as it was a steyr option. I would love to have a case like that.

Hi John,
This one has been sold yesterday afternoon to a great swiss collector.
I have seen many, many M-S here and I have hunted many years with them, particularly with a 1903 stutzen that accounted for a lot of mountain game…but I was a young man then, spending most of my time chasing chamois…
I like that kind of English type rifle and I owe to the true to recognize that it’s rare now to find a 107 years old rifle in such a state of conservation.
That's why, before shipping it to its new owner, I wanted to share these pictures with our friends on NE Forum.
But don’t worry, we're finalizing the last details of Mike's fabulous .458WM M-S and I'm sure you'll enjoy it in the nearest future !

The stock is untouched and retains 99% of its original factory finish !

I have my Grandfather's M1910 takedown, proofed 1922, with a case nearly identical to the OP's.
It, too, has the grip cap extra sight but also the flip up tang sight (along with a Gerard claw mounted scope).
He purchased it 'second hand' circa 1932 in Ceylon

This second image is not of a 'take down', but gives a good view of the 'innards' of a pre WW2 Mannlicher Schoenauer (with the optional extra sight bead in removable grip cap).
