Re: Mannlicher Schoenauer carbine, Model 1903 6.5x54MS

That's a very nice rifle! My very similar one, serial no. 25xxx dating from 1938 has factory-fitted scope mountings of quite a different pattern. The mounts are also see-through, but not quite as high as Don's. They work OK standing, but not prone, with the pronounced drop in the stock.

But they are a brilliant design, with a great magazine, and an effective cartridge. 140 grain bullets give more velocity, but need to be seated out a long way to feed smoothly. Let's hope he finds a good new home!

I do believe this scope mounting is the one featured in "Shindler's List" movie where camp commandant was sniping prisoners. Perhaps someone could verify? Steve

These Wiener (Vienna's)Schnäppermontagen were offered by Steyr pre-WW2 as a"factory option". Most are numbered to the rifle on the inside of the rear leg. I suspect they were actually handmade by several outworkers in the Steyr area, as not two are really alike in dimensions, shape of the half rings and other details.
