rifles in dutch east-india

found this pic's in the net, sometimes around 1930. what do you think about the rifles? the white hunter may have a german M 88 sporter and his native companion seems to have a M 95 dutch mannlicher with original miltary stock but i can be wrong:

the M 88 in 8x57 is a little bit on the ligth side but many M 88 for colony's get new barrels for 9x57.
the 6,5x53R have a fine reputation for big game including elefant's. find this M 95 sporter http://www.rathcoombe.net/sci-tech/ballistics/custom_rifles/classic_mannlicher.html
and the magazin looks like the rifle on the second pic.

Re: rifles in dutch east-india

There still is hunting in Malaysia and Indonesia and I have some good friends from the region. I shall try and find out what old guns are still kicking around. These days they prefer Sauer 202s and stuff like that.

Re: rifles in dutch east-india

interesting, I allways looking for historical material about this area. the only book I know till now is Ton Schilling "Tigermen of Anai". a must have for every armchair hunter.
wonder if its worth to search for old guns there, allways a question of gun law in the last 60 years.
it seem to be that german guns, the mauser on first place, rule this area.
a double rifle made from pure gold for a indian prince may be fine but a farmer gun living in the jungle for the most part's of his life is allways or more of value for me.

I waiting for your opinions about the two rifle's, gentleman. thanks for looking

Re: rifles in dutch east-india

Lancaster,

The guns that I have seen and shot (belonging to friends) in Malaysia were all new ones as I told you. However, in India, Mannlichers were always considered aristocrats' guns among bolt actions while Mausers, Lee Speeds etc were working guns.

I do like the restoration project by Harold Ledbetter that you have posted. There are many such projects being done these days (Corbin has a new one of his own on these very forums) and that can only be a good thing.

Do post pictures of your rifles as well over here.

Good hunting!
