Re: 8mm Lee Speed

According to DocAV it was the 8x50R M93 cartridge as used in the Austrian Mannlicher.

I'm pretty sure I've also seen that in an old catalogue. Still loaded in India as the .315 Indian.

A thread discussing 8mm cartridges including the above .315, which may be of help.

Re: 8mm Lee Speed

the 8x50R, use PRVI 8x56 R brass, resize and cut to 50 mm length

modern .323 bullets are not the best but will work. you need a long cylindrical bullet of 200 grains or better heavier.

Re: 8mm Lee Speed

This is the rifle in question, has a full rib on the barrel and marked BSA C2 on the receiver stock mount under the bolt handle, other question is what is the bracket on the left side of the stock, I assume a telescope mount? I would say it is in 95 % condition there are no serious marks or blemishes other than one sight blade is missing and replaced with a modern one.

Re: 8mm Lee Speed

Hi Rolland. Could you post a close up of the right-hand receiver stock mount area under the bolt handle?

I suspect that the "BSA C2" is actual BSA Co with the o on top of an underscore. Its a common confusion when the o isn't as distinctly stamped as it should have been.

Only a guess, but I think the bracket on the left side may have been a mount for a type of folding aperture sight that was popular at the time. Not quite the same as the common BSA No9 sight, but similar.

Does the right-hand receiver stock mount show a royal cypher (ie a crown) or the words "Lee Speed Patents"? Does it have a date?

Hunter
You are correct it is Co just hard to read. No other markings other than what is pictured.
On another note does anyone have drawings of the 8 x 50R Austrian cartridge Ie; as to overall lenght

CIP Standard for 8x50R Austrian is about 3/4 of the way down the page.

Looks like a peep sight base to me - possibly a Mues?

Appears similar to the Mues Special Sight.

Re: 8mm Lee Speed

Found the sight what a complicated sight.

BSA, for No1 Mk3, 1910, UK. Simple, reliable, forward post is equipped with volley sight peep hole to comply with early competition regulation, plus a going to war requirement when shooters went to WW1 and took their sights with them. Eye relief is controlled by using different shaped mounting plates. Status; Not common but available, collectible.

Re: 8mm Lee Speed

Wow, looks complicated. I guessed it was a peep sight of some type.

WW1 sniper!

Btw I like the idea of a .315/8mm Indian Lee Speed. Something different and exotic.

With imagination one could imagine it being used on axis, sambar, boar, leopard, tiger, buffalo and gaur! Perhaps some if them without imagination such as boar and nilgai.
