.375 2.5 Express ammo source in the USA.

I have a lee speed in .375 Express coming in, I was curious where you guys are getting your .375 2.5" ammo these days. Thank you.

I reload mine, as most would, maybe only Kynoch would load Ammo now days, I have shot a bit of collectible old Kynoch ammo that can be picked up at auctions some time .
I have Lee Speeds which are sighted with the 270gr & 92 Styers that are regulated with the heavier load !
Wow Midway had some Kynoch at $52.99 for box of 5 !!!

I form and reload my own. 405 Win cases with rims modified as required full length resized and loaded with a variety of bullets. The rifles are expensive enough, I'm too cheap to spend that kind of money for the ammo.

I bought some new Kynoch then reloaded the cases.
Good shooting gun on the range. A failure in the field. Bullets are for higher velocity H&H and would not expand at NE velocity on game.
Got rid of the gun because of that.
If you are going to hunt with this caliber find some bullets intended for the .375 Winchester or Use lead bullets.

Yes, the old 270 grain round nose .375 bullets are a bit stiff in the jacket for the 2 1/2" velocity.
They need the same treatment as I described in the Fraser thread - or just make them soft nose splits
to enable the bullet to mushroom, just like they did in the old days.
The .366" bullets are the same - they're constructed for 9.3 x 62 and 74R velocities, not 400/360 or 360 x 2 1/4".

I have about ten boxes of original Kynoch ammo for the 256 Mannlicher which are loaded with steel jacketed soft points. Half are a standard soft point and the other half are a hollow point soft point with a hollow about dia. 1.5 mm and 5mm long in the nose. Maybe the 270 grain Woodleigh RNSN bullet could be setup in a lathe and a hollow drilled in with a #1 or #2 center drill. It would be interesting to see the difference in effect on game. It might make the bullet far more usable at the 375 NE velocities.

I was surprised when reading this thread, went straight to the Woodleigh website, expecting to gind a 270 gr RNSP especially designed for slower velocities of the .375 Nitro Express and NO, only bullets for the .375 Mag and similar.
Surprised that the bullet for the slower velocities no longer exists or was never made by Woodleigh.
Well I WILL also have this issue. I think DUM DUM ing a RNSP might be worth a try, or as you suggest, hollow pointing one. As long as it does not make the SP too fragile.
First time I have realised this is a problem.

I've not tried these but Barnes has two 375 round nose flat point 255gr bullets that might work, the 30496 designed for 375 Win and 30497 for 38-55. They may be a bit lightly constructed compared to the original but for deer and such may be OK. I currently load a Lyman cast GC 264 gr #375449, the old Hornady FP 220 until my supply runs out, and the Speer 235 SP.

Using a centre-drill on 270 and 300gr. Hornadies turned then onto VERYfast expanding bullets indeed.

The logic in that evades me. Why should a soft point bullet with a heavy jacket designed for higher velocities and resists expansion at slower velocity, suddenly be very fast expanding with hole drilled in its nose, at that same slower velocity.
Perhaps, at the higher velocities the bullet is designed for expansion is accelerated by the hole.
Of course I confess I never tried it to find out.

Good read. The kind of thing I enjoy doing myself.
Seems to me, though, that 30-40 Krag brass may be a better starting point than 405Win brass. Probably cheaper too.

Hmmmm,
I have many 405Win cases made from 30/40 Krag.
Maybe they were stretched because I can't imagine .25" being found by simply blowing the cases out...

True, but forming 405 from 30-40 is commonly done so basic for 375 2-1/2” would be a snap.

Seems to me that a.30/40 cases are ,457" the same as
303 cases. I had thought .405 cases were .469" , like a 30/06 with a rim, but according to Wickipedia, they are .461". That is close enough.
Previously I thought thought .405's were .469/70.
My error but corrected using wickie.

Might try Hawk bullets , they offer a .375 round nose 270 grain bullet. I have used their bullets in other cal's. and they are excellent bullets.

As far as using the .405 Winchester brass, they are getting hard to find as well. I have a 100 or so rounds for mine and I don't think Hornady is making them anymore? Not sure on the 30/40?
