Lee Speed in the field

Some time ago I posted photos of a Lee Speed "Type" rifle I had built.
After a few trips out in the bush I though I would post some photos of the rifle in the field.

Thanks JohnK - that is the most beautifully stocked Enfield I have had the pleasure to see.
You did a marvelous job on that stock.

Fantastic to see you had a great time trying out a rifle that would not be out of place a century ago & its still performing just as good now!
Wonderful timber John - you have a good eye for picking the good bits!
Good horns on the top stinky too
Job well done mate

Re: Lee Speed in the field

John that is one sweet looking Lee. Good to see it out in the field. Next time I am up at Rob Blomfields I'll try and remember to take a camera. He has one built (not a lee Speed)on a Lithgow action from memory. Sweet looking and one of the best handling rifles I have ever shouldered. I would wager your Lee would be just as sweet handling.

This may be a stupid question (for give me if it is)But are those goats domestic goats gone wild. They make quite a trophy. I really like the dark colored one. Nice job on the rifle.

Sort of. Some goats were released in the early part of European exploring/inhabiting Aust. so ship wreck survivors and explorers would have a meat supply and others have been domestic stock run wild or just abandoned when stock price dropped to nothing.

Wayne59, As stated the goats are feral from releases a century or two ago. They run wild and are to be found in large numbers in the right spot. There is a big market for them now (overseas) and they are mustered by the landowners for sale. A few photos of some in the wild.

JohnK, I notice that you have a screw at the rear of the quarter rib holding it down. Is there another one under the fixed leaf holding down the front ?

Lovely rifle. Not a bad set of horns on the billy too.

There were or are still a lot of feral goats in the Flinders Ranges. Probably escapees or released from mines, sheep station escapees etc. They do very well there. Haven't hunted there for a long time for goats. Have just been recently thinking I would like to find a place or two again. Trouble is as said, the landowners can sell the goats for good money. Hell I would pay a reasonable amount for a few goats, just to climb around the valleys, cliffs and ridges again. A problem is none of the landowners think you will just shoot a handfull. Just like in the old days, they wanted huge mobs bombed up, and didn't like you shooting only a handfull, their thinking still can comprehend any different result. Well probably not all of them. I would like to hunt good spectacular rugged country which is also the harder country to muster by motorbike.

I actually can't answer that question. It was all left to the gunsmith. I know he made the quarter rib and that it is silver soldered on. I don't know what is under the rear sight. Sorry.
