No1 Mk3 rebarrel, 7x57r or P14 barrel

Long story short, I have a No1 Mk3 sporter project with a sewer piped barrel and have a friend with a unwanted P14 barrel, what would be easier. Putting a 7x57mm Mauser barrel on and cutting a groove for extractor and rim of 7x57mmR or putting the P14 barrel on the rifle. What will be a bigger pain, granted I have a P14 in original full lenght wood that I could always put that barrel on when shotout.

Re: No1 Mk3 rebarrel, 7x57r or P14 barrel

I fitted a Brazilian contract Mauser barrel in 7x57 to my No.1,recut with rim and extractor groove, and it makes a brilliant light sporter. Keep the P14 barrel as a replacement, they are getting scarce !

This pics probably twenty odd years old, when I first built it, I'm currently rebuilding it with a Daniel Fraser style stock.

Don't need to shoot or change anything to the rimmed ctg. The #3 & #4 extractors will work with anything from .45/70's to .22 Hornets, thus 7x57's rim is just fine. Wonderful design, the Enfield.

You will want to keep loads to about 50,000psi, thou - not 57,000PSI as standard CIP for the round. The #3 will certainly handle original factory level 2,350fps loads with 175 RN's.

The magazine is the only trouble - sometimes.

I've a number of friends who converted #4's to .223's, without anything but a small extractor cut in the back end of the barrel. They headspaced off the shoulder as normal for rimless rounds. The empties would just drop into an empty magazine box and that would hold a bunch of .223's before needing emptying, when gopher shooting.

With the 7x57,should be easy to get the factory magazine to work.

......didn't touch the mag, bolt or action.....only replaced the barrel......everything works perfectly......use factory S&B's and Norma 174gr.....Norma's are a bit hotter

Roger

......yes, youre right Daryl, you only have to cut the extractor groove once you've threaded the barrel......no other mod.

I'm going to be out by Ellwood Epps old shop I may just see if I can pick up a No1 Mk3 barrel while out there, it all comes down to cost of a 303 barrel or shipping ontop of the 7x57 barrel
