8mm Lee Speed Questions?

Hi Chaps,

So I just had notification that my latest Lee Speed will be here around next mid week. This No2 rifle looks beautiful. It is in the 8mm calibre which was an option for this rifle but a calibre I have no experience with.

So two questions:

Firstly can someone educate me on the absolute correct round this rifle?

Secondly (and a two part question) this rifle sadly does not have its original magazine. Does anyone know if the '8mm' magazine differs in any way from the .303 magazine? Also if anyone has or knows of a spare magazine (for this 8mm or a .303 for that matter) then please let me know, happy to pay a hansom fee for correct magazines.

Cheers, Roy.

Re: 8mm Lee Speed Questions?

The 8mm Lee Speed is 8x50R. It was at one time also called the .500/320 Manton.

to be more precise its the 8x50R Mannlicher http://municion.org/8mann/8mann.htm
(not confuse with 8x50R Lebel)

cant believe there was a special magazine, just try a common lee enfield military magazin

Re: 8mm Lee Speed Questions?

Hi Gents,

Thanks for that great information. It makes sense to me that BSA would not want to go the the trouble/expense of offering a calibre they would have to completely refit for, so I wondered if standard mags would fit. Hopefully this is the case and I will check it out once it gets there.

I'm still on the lookout for 'any' spare mags though, although I'm sure hen's teeth come to mind!

Also if anyone knows of any newly manufactured 8x50R drop me a line as I certainly will be looking at shooting this rifle.

Cheers, Roy.

can recommend ch4d for a die set, brass can be made by using PRVI 8x56R Mannlicher or any other 7,62x54R Mosin brass. imho, the PRVI 8x56R is the best basic brass.
original there is a .324 diameter bullet of 244 grains weight thats not available anymore, maybe by custom bullet maker.
use a 200 grains or heavier flat base bullets for reloading.

Re: 8mm Lee Speed Questions?

I have a Lee Speed in 8mm. Lancaster has detailed the cartridge......best to look for 8x50R Mannlicher ammo. When I was looking for ammo I was often offered 8x50 Lebel. Totally incorrect.

The magazine housing is a 303 reshaped for the 8mm. The follower is totally different. Good luck finding one of these.

Hi Gents,

Thanks for the great information. I know finding the correct magazine is probably going to be a challenge but I life in hope.

rgg7 - any chance you could email me (or post) some photos of the correct magazine and follower just so I know what I'm looking for?

Cheers, Roy.
