Lee Enfield No 1 Mk 1*** Sporter - Need Parts
|
|
I am in the process of refurbishing a Lee Enfield No 1 MK 1 sporter. It has a Watkins Speed rear sight that I won't be using, and I also have an extra magazine cutoff w/screw and a couple of the sheet metal ramp covers for the issue front sight. I need a magazine to convert to 5rd and the charger guide that mounts on the bolthead. Also trigger guard screws and safety spring screw without buggered heads. ------------------ GeezerD

I think I am going to use a Mauser tangent rear sight similar to the G33/40 sight and once I find a load it likes, I will regulate and mark it in 50yd increments from 50 to 300yds using the issue front sight. I am not trying to duplicate any particular Enfield sporting rifle, plus it's nothing that can't be undone. I will post some pictures as I get a little further along on the project. -------------- GeezerD

I have found a sight that will work out much better than the mauser tangent sight. I found a Martini Cadet Rear sight in excellent condition. It is graduated to 600yd with windage adjustment. I am sure the calibration is different but it should work fine. -------------- GeezerD

About the only thing I have finished so far is the stock work. I added an ebony nose cap after shortening the forend about 4 inches and worked it down to an appropriate profile. The butt stock required quite a bit of work as a result of being oil saturated. But after leeching as much oil out of the wood as possible and using acraglas to reinforce the softened areas it has become quite presentable. I was able to steam out most of the dents although a couple had to be filled because the wood fibers were broken.
I am currently trying to obtain the nessesary parts to finish the project. I have a couple different sight options - A BSA Martini Cadet rear sight or a single fixed, two folding express rear sight. I have some replacement screws for the ones with damaged heads. A new firing pin is on the way and I located a bolt head charger guide in the UK,but it is a bit pricy.
I would still like to find a couple of Mk 3 magazines in VG to Exc condition.
And I still haven't figured out how to post photos to this site. ---------------GeezerD

I bought a couple of complete Martini Henry rear sights off ebay ,they fit the mk3 barrels perfectly ,they have a fixed standing leaf and a ladder thats is graduated to 1000 yds if I recall correctly .Hope fully they are graduated for the 303 cartridge sighting when the converted them to 303 from 557/450 I plan on using them on my lee enfield projects to replace the military rear sights. I am currently in the process of making a 5 shot magazine from a standard 10 round no 1 MK3 magazine ,the same as the magazine used in the no4 pattern BSA sporting rifle chambered in 375 x 2 1/2" from the 1912 BSA catalogue .Its a simple conversion if you have some metal working skills and some hand tools.BSA did not make a special magazine for this cartridge ,they just used a slightly modified standard 10 round magazine.
