Pato's Acquisition:- nice Lee Speed

Here are a few pics of Pato's latest acquisition: very nice hardware indeed!

I'll let him fill you in on the details!

Here is a close-up of the 'crest' on the stock-oval: looks very Nepalese, maybe Indian?

Adds an air of mystique to an already marvellous firearm!

A beautiful sample of the Lee Speed.
Woodleigh are producing a 215gn mono solid for these fine old sporting rifles.

Re: Pato's Acquisition:- nice Lee Speed

Indeed, nice to have you back Marrakai!

Pato's been mining in the mother lode!

This one needs an history lesson, and I'm guessing we might get one...?

I hope so.

Very nice.

Re: Pato's Acquisition:- nice Lee Speed

Here is my Lee-Speed, very similar to Pato's, but heavily altered. It came to me 20 years ago without dust cover, the pre-war German side mount mounted with ill-fitting screws and a hopeless bore. No rifling visible, shot 1foot patterns at 20 paces, most bullets landing sideways. I rebarreled it with a new condition No1Mk3 barrel, screwed and soldered the mount base solid and put the Zeiss "Zielklein scope on. May not be a collectors item, but is a very good shooter.

Could we see some more of this mount, disassembled?

Re: Pato's Acquisition:- nice Lee Speed

Here it is. It is a quite ordinary pre-WWII German side mount marked Akah. Akah = Albrecht Kind, Hunstig is a wholesaler to the trade.
Until a few years ago they were the foremost producer of scope mounts too. The mount top is clamped and locked to the base by turning the levers.
Windage adjustment is by the two opposing screws in the front end of the top.

Re: Pato's Acquisition:- nice Lee Speed

That is lovely. I'm yet to find a Lee Speed currently for sale. Where did this one come from Pato.

Does anyone know if a stock maker of repute in oz has a pattern for the Lee Speed wood work. I have a SMLE that I going to make into a Lee Speed you have when you don't have a Lee Speed.

Re: Pato's Acquisition:- nice Lee Speed

controlled feed,
I missed a $650 BSA No2 Lee Speed sporter last week in Melbourne. By the time I'd sooked at the missus, it had sold. Sometimes doing the right thing is the wrong thing! Was a bit rough, but would have restored nicely ... plus I could have used the stock as a template.
Cheers...

You could try Gordon Cusens mate ,he posts on AHN and a couple of other forums as Juglansregia .Very nice bloke to deal with.

There was a nice Speed for sale on one of the internet sale and auction sites , they were asking 1900.00 .If you send me a pm with your email address I'll send you the pictures.

Re: Pato's Acquisition:- nice Lee Speed

The monogram on the eustucheon looks like "ATGC" in an Arts and Crafts Gothic sort of script. The hook of the G making the crossbar of the A. If what I think is an A were an H, the tops of the uprights would not touch probably.

One of those maddening little pieces of provenance that would be almost impossible to identify without a gunmaker's sale book or a freak of luck. I have an early scope case with something very similar on it, equally unlikely to ever be ID'd.

Re: Pato's Acquisition:- nice Lee Speed

Great looking rifle! A couple of questions if you don't mind: Was the old barrel original to the gun? "Was" the rifling Metford or Enfield? Do you still have the old barrel? Can you supply a picture of the old barrel's Nock's form and the stamps on the bottom that would be under the wood? Jc5 and I would love pics of all of that if it's still hanging about.

Re: Pato's Acquisition:- nice Lee Speed

Well done Pato, the body count is certainly starting to mount for the classic Lee Speed.

What loads are you putting through that baby. I am assuming that it is a 303, are you using Woodleigh 215 grain bullets?

Whatever it is, it definately works.

Thanks for posting.

Michael.

That looks like CTG II (the 2nd). Any more information on where the rifle came from?

The collective over on Doubleguns.com actually tracked a rifle to it's original owner by using just the initials.
