A Morning with German Dogs and a German Gun
|
|
I spent a nice morning over these two stoic German Shorthaired Pointers last Sunday and thought it apropos to bring along my Merkel 347SL to complete the theme. I’ve raised and trained two outstanding English Setters in the past and, since they’ve both passed on, I thought I’d give this noble Teutonic breed a try. The dogs performed wonderfully. I’m buying a puppy from the orange collared Zusha in the early spring after the litter is born in February. We were out working these dogs in preparation for the upcoming NAVHDA trials and I was the designated shooter on these farm-raised birds. I will say the birds flew hard. My right barrel needed the backing of its left-sided twin on several occasions and a rooster teased out two shots before sailing harmlessly across the road.
All told, two roosters and eight Chukar were brought to the bag.

Nice work and nice pictures. Those birds will be tastey - especially the quail!

Just got off the phone with the owner of Zusha and it looks like we'll be heading North this week to hunt for Ruffed Grouse along with another buddy of mine who'll be bringing along a pair of Draathars. This pair really impressed me last year on a great pheasant hunt here in Pennsylvania.
