Re: Driven Boar in Croatia

Thanks for the help Andre!

These are pics from a 5 day driven hunt in early January.

A group of 22 Brits, mostly new to driven boar took about 40 pigs. This was less than we were lead to expect but still a respectable bag, including several nice tuskers (including one 21cm silver medal boar).

I used my sako .270 to shoot 2-3 pigs and it worked well. Incidentally, the two largest keilers (both well over 100kgs) were shot with a .270 and one shot apiece.

Though a the lowest 3.5x on my scope was still a little high for some close range shots (3 meters!) I was able to make do. I much preferred to use my own gun than rent a semi-auto shotgun which I was not familiar with.

The snowy conditions made the beaters work extra difficult, but added something to the hunt in terms of aesthetics.

The camaraderie of driven hunting is a large part of its attraction and we really enjoyed ourselves for the whole time.

Boghossian:

THANKS for posting.

Maybe it is because the weather, terrain and conditions are similar to us here...and the animals so dissimilar, I really enjoy these European hunting posts!! Thanks!

Re: Driven Boar in Croatia

My pleasure! I enjoy pictures posted by others and feel bad if I don't get off my ass and post some as well.

Note the spotted hybrid pigs that occur in the area. These are the result of domestic escapees during the recent strife in the country. Though they are being culled aggresively, a good few of the animals we took showed patches of white colour indicating that the gene pool may be permanently affected.
They make good trophy mounts/flat skins however!

The largest boar taken weighed around 135 kgs. The largest sow was also over 100kgs.

Seemed like quite decent way to spend 5 days. Thanks for the pictures. For me your rifle looked like Sako Finbear. Is it? What kind of bullet and load you use?

Re: Driven Boar in Croatia

Well spotted.

It is a Sako Finnbear, with a Nikon Monarch 3.5-10x50 scope shooting 150 grain Nosler Partition ammo.

I bought it in Edinburgh last year, it is very accurate and I'm pleased with it.

Boghossian::
I and my son took our first "russian" boar here in Texas in November. I must say that our weather was NOT the same here in Texas. We were in shirt sleeves! The Size of your big boar is about like mine. Very simular. I will try to post a photo.
Congratulations. I would love to hunt in Croatia! When I was in Italy last year, some friends were telling me about how they enjoyed Croatia.
Thanks for the post.

Baghossian, I also use a .270 for wild boar with 150 grs.Nosler ballistic tips. They sure get the job done.I have also used Hornady partition and they are just as good.
