Lovely photographs. Around here the fox population has been virtually wiped out by coyotes, but for some reason seems to be making a comeback. I have seen more foxes this year than in the previous five put together. Friends of mine have been watching a pair of grey foxes all summer raising a litter of three within sight of their house, but all the ones I have seen (including road kill) have been the red variety. I suspect the coyote population has moved east to easier pickings in the more urban areas (cats and small dogs). |

Thanks for the pictures Paatti. Predator control is very important, and I've been a bit slack these past few years myself. I should follow your lead, and shot more foxes. Erik |

As a modest contribution, this is the result of the 1st. bullet fired by my son-in-law, when he took up hunting 3 years ago. Note he's wearing rubber gloves when handling a fox. The reason is we fear the lethal Echinococcus multilocularis, a life-threatening parasite worm. |

Fox is definitely not a bad start. Luckily there is no fear of echinococcus in Finland where i hunt. |

This is the last one of -07. Not glamorous looking because he is wet and bit dirty but still a fox. |

Paatti: Great stuff!! How do you hunt them? Do you use a predator call? Rabbit squealer? Thanks for the pictures. The country you are hunting in looks a lot like many places near home, here, except your country looks a little greener {lichens, moss, firs etc}. Maybe you get a bit more precipitation and snow than we do. |

Great stuff, good to see. I gave up handling foxes years ago for similar reasons + we get alot of mange here which is easily transferred to dogs. Anyway, most of my foxes are splattered from here to kingdom come so not a huge amount to pick up to photograph !!! The only good fox is a dead one. |

I hunt foxes in many ways. Sneaking around fields in the late summer when foxes came on to the hay and cornfields. Later in the autumn I use to lurk on the cornfields. Also use stand sometimes. I dont use calls but sometimes imitate mouse squeks to get them closer. Also use cagetraps but those are not very effective. Maybe the most interesting way to hunt foxes is to hunt them with hound dog and terrier. Mostly use finnish hounds and german jagdterrier. Last one I shot went in to the cave and we release terrier in there too. Terrier cant reach the fox so we take it away. I wait above the cave and others went to the next place. After seven minutes fox came out and that is the end of it. Usually here are about half meter snow in this time of the year, but not now. I cant remember this kind of winter. Bit difficult to track. |

Quote: Paati, Have you ever tried throwing handfuls of sunflower seeds out in the snow in the winter to attract foxes? I've found that doing so brings in mice who collect/eat the seeds, and the squeaking mice then attract the foxes. Erik |

Quote: Never tried that, but have to sometimes. Shot one week ago. No photo on that one because of the "too" good hit. Speer TNT hits him on the shoulder and rip of the part of his spine. Instead one photo of the older one. |

Erik, around here we don't hunt foxes yet this is one animal that is regularly killed.Reason being that it is some sort of a superstition among hunters here that when you are on a hunt and you spot a fox you must kill it or your hunt will not be a good one.Hunters are a pretty superstitious lot and will do anything to ensure a good shoot. The fox however gets fucked everytime. |

That's interesting iqbal, I have heard a similar superstition from other hunters too...wonder how it arose? |
