Here's my first one from years ago...
A so called "moped" as it has 2-spike antlers like the steering rack of a moped.
The gun, of course, is a model 1895 Winchester in 8,2x53R firing 200grs Sako Hammerhead bullets.

And using a classic Winchester 1895 in 8.2x53R as well.
What is that cartridge in "Yankee"? Or is it an original Euro chambering of the rifle for sales way back when?

Encourage your hunting companions to post more photos too. The Northern Elg/Moose hunts are a great tradition and worth seeing more of.

its a finish semi-wildcat, a 7,62x54R Mosin with a 8mm S(8,20 mm diameter) bullet. a good solution if you have a ruined barrel but I believe the main reason was that that finnland was having a hunting law after WW 2 for a while that prohibited the 7,62mm for big game hunting.
same story like the 8x57IS and the 8x60 after WW 1 in germany. senseless law's at all
classic rifle, I believe Sako is allways making factory ammo in 8,2x53R

You beat me to it!
That's the story: in the 50's you didn't get a licence for military calibers; and for moose the law required a minimum of 8mm bullet. Thus the 8,2x53R and 9,3x53R were born.
And yes, Sako is the only one making factory ammo for the 8,2x53R.
Incidentally, here's the same rifle "slightly" modified and the latest moose, a decent-sized cow from last season.

btw schaukis, there is no reason for dont make some good pics and make a extra post about your rifle. we in the rest of the world see such classic's not every day. like the winchester 95 very much, the only wini on my "to do" list .

Here are some photos I would like to share with you from "elg" hunting in Sweden this autumn. I shot this 2 year old bull high up in a mountain. I shot it with my Demarteau DR 9,3x74, bullet Norma Oryx 18,6 g. It was a nice hunt in companionship with my female Jaemt dog. A dog specialized to front the elg and get it to stand still when the dog barks.

Here I also have two pictures of a living elg bull. I met him just near my farm some weeks ago. The hunting season stopped for adult elks in december, so if not the wolves got him, he is still out there. You can see that he has dropped his antlets. He are also very curious.

Paatti: She is a old lady. 11 years old but still going strong. She has one problem, if you want to get her back you must shoot the moose. And thats a problem because she can´t read maps and see border lines:). It can be late nights.
Daryl: Thats a impressive moose with big antlets. In Scandinavia the antlets and mooses are smaller than the big ones in Alaska and Canada. Nice parade.
I have a mobilephone photo from last autumn. Maybe not that nice to look at, rather messy. A female shot on very marshy ground. Blaser R93 9,3x62 with silencer. Norma oryx 18,5 g. Also shot with help of the dog.

Daryl, they are young. The moose hunt in Sweden are regulated. For example in most areas you are obliged to shoot as many calves as adults. And it can be like you must shoot at least 50 % females. Bulls can be regulated so you are not allowed to shoot to many big ones. But most hunters in Scandinavia wants to shoot a big bull. But few do. I have shoot some big bulls, but they are never as big in widht and height as mooses from Alaska.

TKS, Sville. Your moose appear about the same size as similar aged Shiras Moose in Montana and Idaho. They are only a bit smaller than ours, but we do get some giants at times.
The last moose I shot was a yearling bull calf with hair covered knobs on his head. He dressed out at 225 pounds without the lower legs or head. Decent for a calf as even our 2 year olds are dressing out at over 350 pounds now, closer to 400 for some.
We have had a limited entry hunt for mature moose, since 1979 - very few big bulls are shot. This takes the pressure off them so the best can breed. This has resulted in an increase in quality of the gene pool, and our 2 year old spikes and 2 pointers(each side) are very rare indeed. Most two year olds have small palms now with up to 7 and 8 points per side. They and the calves grow up quickly.

This is a photo from a successful moose hunt in Sweden. One or two of these men should be relatives to me. I cant tell the year, early 19xx?? I think its interesting to see what they show up of rifles, the dog, other equipment, the appearence compared to today of the bull. It was very rare to shoot moose in Sweden those days. The population of moose have been increasing from 1950 and did peak in 1980-85. Mooses yearly shot in 1940 were under 10 000, and in 1982 it were 175 000. Today around 80 000 yearly. I hope you like this photo from the old days.

Yes, Thankyou Sville - by all means, more pictures - the rolling blocks are quite possibly Husquvarna 11.7x44R's. the 'lad' in the centre might be holding a Husky SXS, but probably a rolling block as well judging by the wrist- appears to be another solid action.
These rifles and rifle/shotguns(m20 and m17) are now being sold at tradeexcanada.com in Quebec as well as at Allen's Armoury in the States. The ctg. used int he RB's is quite similar (almost identical) to the .50/70 American round. They also had a 9.3x57R, and 8x54R. The 9.3x57R was originally BP ctg. I think.(bears no resemblance to the German 57mm case)

I have a photo from moose hunting about 60 years ago. Its my father that have shot a small bull. He worked as a Forester and were responsible for the hunting activity. He is next year 80 years old and still hunting. This photo is from around 1950. The rifle is a Husqvarna 9,3x57 and no scope. Probably model 46.
