best non jhp defence loads in 357 magnum

Hi, its me again and sorry my new question is a bit oftopic. I have got chance to buy a colt python form a buddy ( he has got 2) for target and fun shooting and sd. My new question is already in the subject line and it is a more theoretical question because in my conutry (austria) the crime rate is not so high and it is very unlikly that I have to use my colt for something else than fun shooting, but in an case of emergeny I want an effective manstopper. . But I have got a little problem: in my country jhp ammo is illegal for pistols and revolvers.
which best non jph defence bullet in 357 mag would you recomend?

I'd use full wadcutter, moderate velocity.

Re: best non jhp defence loads in 357 magnum

I've heard they're illegal in Canada as well, but I shoot them all the time in both .357 and .44 mag. Besides, it's illegl to use any firearm for self-defense here, let alone a handgun. (where are you from where such ridiculous laws are present?) I second the Wadcutter suggestion, but at high velocity. Seat 'em up-side-down if only sifting them along - oh, yeah, HP's are illegal. What about hollow cavities filled with priming compound- shouldn't really go there - sorry.
: Swords are OK. Got 3 and a bow and a spear.

It theoretically is not a JHP...but do they disallow all hollow points or just jacketed ones?

What would Austrian law say about a plain lead hollow base wadcutter seated backwards? If they don't object, try that route.

I have done some investigations conerning the law and I have found out that only jhp ammo is not allowed, it would be possible to use lead hp bullets.

If that is the case, then try some plain lead hollowbase wadcutters, seat them backwards, and you are in business at any range within 25 yards. No need to drive them fast either, you can drive them at .38 Special +P velocities or lower.

I think Hornady still makes hollow base wadcutters in this calibre, you can use the load data you would use for the same bullet seated normally. You can do the same with hollowbase wadcutters in any of the larger centrefire handgun calibres as well.

Also if you want to punch through a perp's car door to nail him, any of the 160+ grain Keith type bullets loaded to .357 magnum velocities will do it. Personally for an all around load for a .357 I would use one of the 160+ grain Keith bullets.
