I'm a newbie, just getting started.
Self defence and hunting are not legal uses in South Aust. But maybe I might venture to places with more freedom and libertarian values.
My first, shouldn't be really on the list. Wanted an STI Trojan 1911 and the almost new .38 Super was there. Use is for whatever might happen, indoor club target shooting and onecday major class IPSC competition. It needs a better front sight.
My next will be a cheapish .22 RF target pistol. Probably a Ruger mk IV or whatever the model is called now. Use indoor club shooting. I would use it for fun plinking if non club use was allowed.
Not sure about this model, but would love to try rabbit hunting with one, wherever it might be legal. Will start on new thread.
I will need a 9 mm. My choice would be a SIG P226. Indoor club competition, minor class IPSC. Zombies and the apocalypse.
Everyone needs a Colt Govt 1911 .45 ACP. Not possible here. Coppers think they are evil. For major class IPSC. Historical attraction. Serious zombie knockdown power.
I do want a .577 Snider Howdah. For my own Howdah charging tiger competition. Maybe the BGRC Howdah comp. Historical antique attraction.
A BP ML Howdah. As above.

This super ugly Pedersoli abomination in .45 Colt and .410, first thing would be to send it to have a new pistol stock made for it.

A .455 Webley Revolver MkVI use for Metal silhouette. Historical attraction.
.45 Colt 1876 revolver. Cowboy attraction. As above. Match it with an 1876 lever action rifle
.357 Revolver of some sort. Target shooting. Metal silhouette. Zombies.
.44 Magnum revolver. Same as above. Bears!:)
Derringer. Chambering? Not possible.
Set of ML BP duelling pistols? Fun. Also for those insults one can not ignore! When a sabre or foil is not selected.
.58 ML BP pistol.
I almost forget and these are furtherer up the list. A Mauser 1896 7.63 semi auto with wooden holster stock.
And the compulsory Luger Parabellum.
A air pistol. For fun plinking.
As one handgun can only be acquired each six months with justification. I think I am dead by now ....

MAN, where do I even start???
Between my wife and I, we have a few laying around..

9mm
I use an East German 9mm MAK for concealed carry (actually 9.3mm).
I recently purchased a M&P9 Shield M2.0 NTS to replace the 9mm MAK but haven't used it yet.
41 Mag
S&W Model 58 41 Mag 4" barrel for hunting and carry in the woods when exploring.
44 Mag
RUGER Redhawk 44 Mag 5 1/2" barrel for hunting.
45 ACP
COLT Custom Govt. 45 set up for +P loads with a 6" barrel. Use for target and exploring.
455 Webley Revolver VI
Owned a Webley 4” Mark VI with “Garda Síochána” Markings. Sold it a couple of years ago. I really like that that gun. Was in excellent condition but it is time to start selling off my collection.
I would love to own a .577 Howdah. Historical antique attraction.

Nice list Jim. Any listing Ripp would make, would just make me super jealous, but happy for him & Addie.
I have a few, but favourite is the 4" M29. I also like a 4 5/8" Ruger Blackhawk, 4 screw frame .357 from 1972. I also use it for the BP ctg. gun event at rendezvous. I have a convertible flintlock/caplock pistol, also for rendezvous competition, in .54 flint and .45 cal. These are the ones I use, along with a little Colt DA Police Pos.- plinking, which is all we can do with them here.
Others of no consequence.
I don't have a .22, but would really like a S&W Model 17 in .22, just like my bro's.
When we were younger & in practise (30yrs. ago), we were shooting 1" groups with it at 20-25yards, standing, SA of course.

Pretty hard to answer this question in detail, as Ripp said, but in new stuff I like Colt 1911 platform centrefire pistols and S&W revolvers.
Rimfire target pistols is anything with a REALLY good trigger.
Personally don't like polymer, even for holsters!
But hey: each to his own.
And the vintage stuff is a really long list...

I know Marrakai has at least two from my list.
I know some of our American friends can make lists making Aussies and many other countries people green with appreciative envy. Curl has a great collection too. But at least we do not live in the UK where there is a complete ban.

Most of my friends have quite a few handguns.. in excess of a dozen or more...some have several dozen up to and over 100... they are just handy to have around..
Recently in a local gun shot where I purchased a 1873 Colt in 45 Colt caliber from the collection, the shop was selling a gentlemen's collection that had passed away.. he had over 1,000 Colt collectibles.. A 1000... impressive number for one guy...
I actually just got one back yesterday from another member on this forum (Tinker) who did some work for me. It is a Ruger Vaquero in 45 Colt.. One I wear when checking cattle in the forest and mtn. areas... replaced the factory barrel with a more accurate custom and had him put a gold front sight on for easier sight acquisition in darker areas.. as in timber and getting charged by a bear
Looks really nice.. I might replace the walnut grips on it for something a bit bigger and more rubber like (Pachmayer). I am not a big person but have big mits.. The little factory grips feel too small and awkward in my hands..especially if I add a couple more grains of powder to the reloads..
I have not shot it yet however Tinker stated it was shooting exceptionally well with a load he cooked up..so, I will start there ..

Yes we are rather jealous of you cousins across the pond, get all the good stuff & lots of it to play with. Glad to hear you have something that fits the bill in dark areas Ripp, might have been a bit small for the buffalo charge but it only takes one good aimed shot!
As to Tinker doing the work for you....half your luck!!!

Looking at the Pedérsoli "howdah", one reason for that butt ugly ridiculous pistol stock might be it was required to reach the front trigger? As pointed out in the "What is a howdah?" thread, a real howdah pistol has curves near the trigger, tang etc. A shotgun action is more straight. Why existing shotgun actions might not make good howdah conversions? A reason for that aweful pistol grip.
Pity as one of these would make a nice howdah shooting competition handgun. Relatively cheap. I would still try to restock one with some sort of "banana" extreme curve perhaps? Might even handle worse than that US car grip?
As for shotgun conversions I'm sure some .410s with hammers might be better? Maybe other gauges?
I do strongly prefer hammers on a howdah.

Legality?
I talked with the SSAA president in SA the other day. Purchasing a "sawn off shotgun" (ie what the police might see them as) for club target shooting might be very problematic. As David said, it hasn't been tested yet. Also as a .45, larger than .38, a metal silhouette targetvshoot might be needed to satisfy SA police for greater than .38..
The .577 Snider probably fits antique status and collector status if that's the only way.
A BP handgun? Hopefully not an issue? No idea.

Regarding your posts above on Howdah pistols, the "elephant in the room" (pun intended) is the top-lever.
A howdah cartridge will generate recoil, especially if used one-handed in haste, and the top-lever will likely split the web of the thumb on the shooting hand.
Pedersoli's remedy is ugly as hell, but clearly designed to circumvent litigation.
The best remedy of course was an under-lever or perhaps a side-lever opening.
...and lack of the top-lever further circumvents the suspicion of a sawn-off shotgun.

Any ctg. firing handgun, (meant to be fired with one hand) is a handgun here, regardless of when it was made or if ammo is available, however, an actual antique flintlock muzzleloading pistol is a non-firearm here, apparently and requires no license.
