Re: Handgun cartridges going extinct??

Interesting. The .40 S&W is the most popular (most often shot) handgun ctg. at our club. I would say, slightly more popular even, at least equal to the 9mm except for use in IPSC.

Re: Handgun cartridges going extinct??

I look in every trash bin on any range I visit and found only ONE 40 S&W case in all the years here.
have found more 38 S&W cases because there is a guy with a webley revolver visiting the range from time to time.
9mm and 38Sp/357 mag dominate all!
sometimes 32 S&W long what is a serious target shooter cartridge, sometimes 9 mm Makarov( because a lot of them were sold very cheap after the end of the cold war) and 44 mag. 45 acp is also very, very rare.
have only the walter ppk with 1000 geco cases for reloading so fear I am not a real support for the ammo industry when making 7,65 Br/32 ACP.
in my eyes still the best cartridge in a pocket pistol, would not go for the 380 acp.

Re: Handgun cartridges going extinct??

Well, different local, different guns, I guess. Lots of 9mm cases of course, but just as many .40 S&W here, maybe not as many as 9mm in general, but some days, more 40's.
There are the odd .45 Auto brass on the floor of the shooting shed, but mostly aluminum non-reloadable stuff. .45 Auto with small pistol primer pockets in brass showing up at times, though.

Why would that be the way you feel about the .380APC for a pocket pistol?
Cartridge too sizeable to fit in a small pistol?

Seriously, why would anyone pay any attention to a incoherent rant from 'Field and Stream"?

Re: Handgun cartridges going extinct??

Good article. With the exception of the 40S&W, I suspect all will have lingering deaths with ammo runs every now & then to satisfy the market.
I am surprised about the 40S&W but perhaps it doesn't offer much over the 9mm and 9mm ammo is very cheap.

both are small cartridges but I value penetration more than "stoping power"
with the 7,65 you get 9 rounds in the little walther ppk when using pp magazines, thats enough reason for me.

Re: Handgun cartridges going extinct??

Interesting to see people come to the defense of the .25 ACP in the comments to the article. I guess it is an iconic round as one of the commenters says. I guess it’s the John Browning connection.

I’ve never fired or even held one of these little pistols. I suppose the Beretta 71 in .22LR as used by Mossad is a better choice in ultra concealable pistols.

I don't believe the 40 is dead yet..still many manufacturers selling handguns in that caliber..while not even close in popularity to the 9mm..there are still many who prefer the extra ft/lbs of energy...

Many of the courses offered for self defense prefer the 9mm for various reasons..more rounds in the mag..softer recoil..proven effectiveness with the correct bullets..etc...so, that isn't doing the 40 any favors as well..

Re: Handgun cartridges going extinct??

Part of the 9mm appeal is that the ammo is a relatively inexpensive military cartridge that is available worldwide.

The little Beretta in 25ACP and 22LR are fun pistols and easy to unload a mag @ a 5 yd target in a second or two. 22LR are significantly less 25ACP and cannot see a reason now for 25ACP (other than feeding old pistols)

Re: Handgun cartridges going extinct??

I find it interesting that 20 years ago the future of the 40 S&W was seen as very awesome, sometimes they say than it make the 9mm Parabellum obsolet.
now it seems this round have overstep the peak when the 9mm is in the 117s year of its service life and doing well.

I believe the 25 acp was never a top seller, many owner of a 25 acp pistol probably bought only a 25 round box for the rest of her life. the price make the difference between 25 acp and 22 lr but without a doubt the 25 is the better cartridge giving higher pentration with full metall jackets and the pistol have less problems because of the ammo.

Re: Handgun cartridges going extinct??

The advantage the 25 acp has over the 22 LR is that it feeds more reliably. Many 22 LR pocket pistols will have feeding problems, while the 25 acp just works. (Can't say much for the power or accuracy of the 25 acp, but they do tend to be highly reliable--even the cheapies.)

I can't help but recall reading a similar piece with similar conclusions, back when I was in high school. All of the dying cartridges named then are still around.

Re: Handgun cartridges going extinct??

I wonder if the .25 acp can be loaded a little hotter or otherwise improved by handloading. Also, it would be interesting to know if Super Vel or anyone else ever offered a hot load.

What is the strongest pistol offered for the cartridge? My guess, just from the looks of the gun, would be the prewar Mauser pocket pistols.

I looked around online a little and there are a few folks who reload the cartridge but none who recommend hotter loads. Also, greater than usual care with powder charges is needed, a tenth of a grain is a lot.

I'd rather have a .25 acp than nothing in a bad situation and I wouldn't want to be shot by one. It's an interesting little cartridge.

Odd you mention the above-

I was given a Beretta in 25Cal several years back as a gift..have never actually fired it.. I tried the trigger with its 2 foot trigger pull and decided I would stick with my Sig or Smith .. In all seriousness, the one I have would be a contestant for the worst trigger ever..
