Colt Single Action Army-- 45 Colt Caliber

Well, I have gone from Glocks to a Colt Single Action Army..

Have wanted one of these for a very long time.. so, here she is..

Used but in very good condition.. about 98% with original box, papers, etc..

I fear I am slowly falling to the dark side..first a model 71 Winchester, now this.. the other thing I fear is buying guns online could be addictive and costly...

Nice,(VERY NICE) Art. Now, to gauge (measure) the cylinder exit holes and the groove dia. and see what you have.
.45 Colt is an awesome ctg. & fun to shoot.
I just pictured Elmer hung up in the right hand stirup, gun belt in his arm pit trying to get that single action colt out of the holster,
finally getting it out while being kicked and kneed in the head & shoulders and shooting the bronc. (yes- 38/40) 2nd or 3rd shot worked.
Sincerely hope that doesn't happen to you, but you'll be ready if it does.
250gr. .45's will be better than the .38/40's 180's.

Excellent!

Careful, soon you will be calling the shop to order something in 500JRH.

I've been running a S&W 25-9 this week.
I really like the 45 Colt

RIPP! I AM YOUR FATHER!

As you can tell by my screen name, I'm a bit of a fan of sixguns. (Especially .45s). No other handgun fits the hand like a Colt Single Action Army. They feel like you were born with it.

Hell, even the bad clones feel good!

And as for the .45 Colt, even though it may not be the hottest, flattest shooting cartridge around, short, fat and slow still gets the job done!

Welcome to the Dark side my friend!

DAD,

Send Money...

Yes by our name I can tell you are a fan... funny thing.. back in the late '70's and 80's I had several Ruger Blackhawks and Super Blackhawks.. all in 44 Mag.. had not shot one much in the last 10 years.. then a few months ago started shooting one again.. they are a ton of fun.. really enjoy them.. and can be very accurate..

I also picked up a Ruger Vaquero to shoot more for practice.. got a great deal on it at one of the local gun shops.. Have not shot it yet.. plan to this weekend..

After my cousin died, I ended up with the Ruger Blackhawk I sold to him back in about 1975 - no, not a .45(I wish), but a .357 with 4 5/8" bl.
It is very accurate to this day with either .38's or mangleums.
The SA's are fun to shoot, especially with the 4-click hammer.

Have shot one of those as well.. the one caliber I would really like to use a bit is the .41 Mag...

A friend had a 5" Smith model 57 I believe.. gold dot front site..V notch rear.. man that thing was accurate.. still checking around a bit.. factory ammo for the .41 seems to be a bit scarce however.. but that's alright..reloading is fun..

as a child I had one, maybe two, I forget, Colt .45 cap gun(s), with black metal frame and plastic "ivory" grips. I really wish I knew where it/they are now???

I doubt one could buy a toy of that sort of quality nowadays (?) and if you could, the cops would try to ban it as being too real.

As an adult, I love one again, a shooting one this time. And a suitable lever action in .45 as well. Fun.

Ripp, a very nice Colt. Can’t beat the .45 Colt for fun and if you load BP you get a real BOOM too.

For very correct period reproduction leather, and located in your part of the West, talk to Rick Bachman.
I have one of his holsters for my Colt SAA and it is a very nice piece.

I apologize for being off topic, but in addition to a Colt SAA, caliber .44 Special, I also have an original 2nd Model S&W Schofield revolver which needs some work done on it. Specifically, the bolt spring is broken, so the cylinder fails to lock up when the hammer is cocked. I have been trying for some time now to find a gunsmith willing and able to repair this problem, and help in my search would be most welcome.

Nice. I used to have one with factory ivory grips, sold it for some reason. I also had a number of the US Firearms SAAs, fanciest one was a replica of the Sears gun. Sadly I do t have any of them anymore. You could say I’m Single Action poor.

I do have fun..but it's not all fun.. now I have to fight the virus store hours to buy more ammo..

I had a very similar toy gun as a kid...we used to play Cowboys and Indians on our horses as kids.. shooting at each other.. using the corrals as a fort... How is that for politically incorrect ??

Was a different world back then, not saying it was better, but certainly much more simpler ..

Ah yes- the M&P model 57, in .41 Mag. I was thinking along that line when I phoned Elmer in Salmon, Idaho & spoke to him about it. He suggested it would be fine as a policeman's gun, but the 4" M29 would be better as I was a handloader (he's asked about that point), thus I went with the .44. I had previously purchased a .41 Mag on a Ruger Blackhawk in '72 in Smithers and tested it. Seems to me, it had a 6" bl. With factory lead 210gr. (I think or maybe 220gr.) it shot 8" at 100 yards off bags. I took it back as it wasn't accurate enough to satisfy me and bought a Super Black hawk in .44 with the 7 1/2" bl. That one did 5" with green box 240gr. gas-checked SWC and was OK. Seems to me, I sold that one to my bro in about '74 and we cut the bl. to 4 5/8. That made it quite handy and no less accurate. We both preferred shorter bls. on handguns back then. I still do.

Indeed..

The movie "THE SHOOTIST" was one of my all time favorites with John Wayne.. All time classic. Another is "UNFORGIVEN" with Clint Eastwood.. or "OPEN RANGE" ..Kevin Costner..

I grew up on a farm/ranch.. so this is not unfamiliar to me.. we branded, vaccinated, etc 153 cow/calf pairs yesterday.. was a long day.. but that is done..

In terms of the Colt..thank you ..I did pick up a Ruger Vaquero as a truck handgun --just to plink with at the ranch.. have a pretty nice little handgun course set up..will try to take some pics this week and post..

Hope all is well with you and your family over there amongst this craziness..

Re: Colt Single Action Army-- 45 Colt Caliber

Yes - as you rotate the cylinder, butt down.
You can actually get pretty good at that with practice. My bro used a Ruger Super Blackhawk 4 5/8" .44 Mag for the first IPSC match he entered.
They had the 12 shots in 7 seconds routine at 7 yards at that shoot (1975) & he was just barely over the break-even time - something like 7 1/4
seconds. LOL - Young and dexterous with a purpose.
That event was an easy one with my 4" M29, shooting 21gr. 2400 and 275 SWC's. Speed loader, of course.
In RIPP'S first picture the gun in the case shows the left side and the ejector rod spring, rod is inside the coil spring.

IF I had a handgun, I don't have one yet but am licensed, I don't believe I can't even setup a home range like that myself. Even though we used to have local police practising on our land in an old quarry years ago.

I was reading the new guidleines for the opening of shooting ranges here and it mentioned group A included "home ranges". I sarcastically mentioned does this include handguns ... who on Earth am I harming if I setup a similar little range for plinking fun? Especially when my club is still closed by stupid un-necessary laws?

Of course I CAN do it with a shotgun, or rifle, but not a handgun.

Enough negative ranting.

Good stuff Ripp, have fun. I am sure you will be practising quick draw shooting from the hip.

I like to use orange clays as target for quick shooting. Satisfying when one blows them up.

I've also a big steel gong target given to me by a fellow shooter who worked at Lightforce. I gifted him some wine in return. Also satisfying for quick shooting.

Your knockdown targets as well, cool.

I'm envious. Six gun play at the home range.

We don't get to do that legally either, John. I'd expect that farmers or farmer's kids with Restricted P.A.L.'s
likely shoot on their own land, however those (licensed farm kids) might not be plentiful.
I would if I owned acreage.

THOSE comments make me realize how good we really have it here in terms of gun laws.. You don't get to shoot on your own land?? WTF??? Don't really want to get into another political rant, but that is some serious BS right there...

I was coming back from eastern Montana several years ago, early cold morning.. coyote was running on the other side of the interstate.. I whipped down the ditch across the oncoming two lanes of the interstate.. parked in the ditch on the other side, hopped out with my rifle and hammered him... granted that was illegal, but, several vehicles went by as I did that.. no one said a word.. Gotta love Montana..

Ripp:
In Australia that's for handguns only: they are tightly regulated here compared with longarms.

Some jurisdictions here may require a minimum-size property for justification of the genuine reason to apply for a shooters licence, all necessary since the post-Port Arthur sh!tstorm, but for most of us a simple hoop to jump through.

In many ways we have it easier than you guys:
no hunting licences, tags, bag limits or seasons for pigs, goats, deer, buffalo etc. With property access, we just get stuck into it anytime we like. All good.

We do have a hunting season actually:
1st January to 31st December!

Thank you for that explanation.. and yes, in terms of hunting licenses you certainly seem to have a more liberal (hate that word) hunting season..

I was thinking more of what was posted in terms of what is and is not permissible around the world anymore when it comes to firearms. Canada, just in the last week, made dozens of firearms illegal as well.. It seems governments around the world are certainly concerned about what is and is not acceptable for their civilian populations to have.. I find that troubling.. Seriously, what is the harm in having a target range?? Will one of the plates run after someone and kill them?? It all seems very odd to me and way to restrictive on personal rights. Guess its similar to what you feel about hunting seasons??

In the meantime, keep hunting I guess..

Pedersoli makes a nice '73 in .45 Colt, as well as a couple really nice Colt Lightnings in both carbine and rifle lengths. My bro has the carbine Ped. Colt Lightning. Really nice rifle to shoot.
I think he uses 5744 and Tin Star for powders in both for cowboy action loads.
For medium power loads, Unique is a good one, for sure.

Re: Colt Single Action Army-- 45 Colt Caliber

ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh the SAA.

I think thye are "pure class".

I have owned 2 in my life. My 1st was when I was 15 years old and it was a 1st generation black powder SAA made in 1881. It was beat up and way out of time but that's why I got it for a price a 15 year old could afford. I spent time and a bit more money and under the watchful eye of our neighbor I restored it to 100%function condition with perfect timing. The neighbor was the head of restorations for the State Museum system at the time, so he was "the man" when it came to doing such work.

My 2nd SAA was a 44 Special, 3rd generation I got when I was still in the Marines. I had to bend the front sight a bit to the left to get it to shoot to point of aim, but once done it would fire 6 shots into a target the size of a 50 cent piece at 20 years. I killed a bunch of varmints and 2 deer with that gun.
I no longer have either one. I sold them at times in my life when money was needed.
But a nice SAA is a dream gun I am sure you'll enjoy it a great deal.

Oh..................try 8 grains of Unique and a 260 grain keith bullet. I had a S&W M25-5 in 45 colt that was REAL accurate with that load.

In my 1st Gen SAA I simply used a case full of black powder compressed about 1/8" under the same 260 grain bullet but used black powder lube with that load.

Another good load is 10gr. Unique and the 200gr. Speer flying ashtray. 1,000fps and pretty good smack. That is the load my
bro had in his New Service Colt that he packed as an RCMP Const. in the 70's. That one shot to the sights. We were a bit roughshod, then, according to the "rules".
