the only thing I could do with such a masterpiece is to hold it against a belt sander

I see as good or maybe better scrimshaw at rendezvous every year on people's powder horns.
Yes- that looks horrid on a pistol.
This is my 'working' powder horn for my .58 and 14 bore rifles, built by a fairly accomplished horner in Penn.
