Beautiful gun.
Shortness of grip, no trigger guard (std derringer design, of course) to keep trigger finger in place ~ would become a SS , even with 300g 45-70, with me. Add Hogue grips (pretty wood hidden I know) and a horizontal spur abbreviated TG would give something to hang on to. Or, could just fire .45LC "cowboy" loads. Would hate to have rotation cause scratch up from losing grip. Pat

Watched it. Oouch! Bet their wrists and tops of their hands talked to them next morning. See now they prevented rotation with two-handed grip.
Used to shooting 12g at times, one-handed. New to me guns I hold at arms length - never near my face when firing them at first. Bought a Stevens 311 SxS 12 at a GS. Think I wanted to check patterns close-up (small piece of plywood)on each barrel. Surprise. Had been modified to fire BOTH bbls if front trigger pulled first. Just a surprise, no pain, and no rotation as my forearm was on top of comb. No way I'd shoot that 45-70 derringer!! Pat

I saw one of these Derringers last week it a local gun shop. In the "pre-owned" section! Interesting gun but gilding the lily a bit too much for me. You already have the .45 Colt in the other barrel. What more do you need! In it's original loading of a 250gr conical lead slug over 40gr of black powder at 900fps, the .45 Colt was designed to meet the U.S. Calvary's specs for a revolver cartridge that could drop a running horse with a single shot. With hot loads in a proper gun (read that "stout"), it will out perform the .44 magnum using heavier slugs with considerably less pressure.
Now, I like the .45/70. It is a fine rifle cartridge. Of course, there are many other more modern cartridges that outperform it, but if used properly, the old stump roller can and will get the job done. However, using it in a Derringer for personal defense is just asking too much!

10gr. Unique and 200gr Speer Flying Ashtray from a .45 Colt Derringer back in the 70's was enough for me.
I would definitely NOT shoot that thing in .45/70.
.410 shotload and soft factory .45Colt - OK. It's heavier and larger than the one I fired.
I also refused to shoot one of those in .44 mag. One writer described the experience as:
"Stand in front of a large oak desk. Raise your hand over your head, full stretch. Open your palm & spread your fingers as wide as you can - now - slam your hand down FLAT onto the table top as hard as you can - "POW!" - you just experienced one shot from a .44 mag Derringer."
Not for me. Using round grips on my 4" m29 is more than enough. 2 1/2 finger hold on 21gr. W296 and 300gr. Truncated Cone commercial cast bullet is more than enough! It stings, each shot.
.45/70 - no thanks.

I'm with you Daryl!
Further to this,I bumped into an old mate of mine Bob Mc..., a few years ago.
He used to shoot a lot of handgun metallic siliuette, and for years used an XP-100 in 7mm-08.
I asked him how he was etc....... he told me he was suffering from bad arthritis his right hand!
I suggested to him "Maybe a few to many 7-08's?", he looked at me with a surprised look on his face......
I didn't take a lot on board, whilst at school but I do remember "For each and every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction". Need I say any more.

I have fired one of those in 44 magnum. Full power loads. Only fired 2 shots, the F11 target 3 meters in front of me was safe. They are very hard to operate with big hands and no I will not be volunteering to fire the 45-70.

My 12" Contender is bad enough to shoot. Less than half the weight, same round? Nope.
