NICE! Want 2, one of each - actually just the Casul - however, the .480 is QUITE interesting.
It would be a good ctg. for a Ruger #3.

Reading the report, the author was stating how much more diffucult he felt it was to control the 454 vs the 480. which I found interesting..

I shot the 460 S&W in a 3" barrel last summer..not an enjoyable gun to shoot..while certainly shootable..just didnt like the feel of that thing..huge size and weight..I prefer something like a Model 29 or Super Blackhawk size..

3" .460 yikes.

The 5 or 6" .500 S&W magnum I shot last summer with 325gr. factory ammo, kicked less than my round-butt grips on the M29 4" using max. 300gr. TC commercial cast, max. load W/H110.

I think the big gun and a decent round with 4 or 5"lb max. would be perfect.

I find the long barrels have a bit too much muzzle flip for quick recovery. The 4" M29 with full sized, smoothed grips excels at quick recovery, in comparison that is.

Looks like Ruger is going to try and poach Freedom Arms territory. I never really understood the reason behind the 480, it's little more than a light special of the 475 Linbaugh. Maybe Ruger just wanted their name on a big bore pistol cartridge? I've got an Alaskan in 454 that was worked over by Bowen Classic Arms, it makes for a very nice carry piece for bear country. A few years ago I tied the S&W 500 in one of their 7.5" Performance Center guns, it was very unpleasant to shoot.

I would be happy with the 454. I like the 45Long Colt and that makes for cheap practice.

Think they will make some inroads into the Freedom Arms Camp with half the price being the main reason. Having said that those Freedom Arms guns are really nice..you get what you pay for..

The author of this article stated the 480 was considerably easier to handle than the 454..while still throwing out bullets in excess of 300grs..with considerably less pressure..maybe that is the reason it is still around..dont know have never owned one..if I get one of these it will be the .454..

I've got an Alaskan in 454 that has been worked over by Hamilton Bowen. I had wanted to find one in 480 and have him ream out the cylinder to handle the 475 as well. I guess I was too early as the new production 480s were not shipping at the time.

Re: Ruger Super Blackhawk--454 Casull and 480 Ruger--NEW

I never understood the point of the .480 Ruger. I agree, probably to have the name.

I have 2 Freedom Arms revolvers, a 6" .454 Casull with iron sights, and a 7 1/2" .475 Linebaugh with 2x Leupold in a 4 ring TSOB mount from SSK. Both are ported by MNP with dual traps, which helps to minimize muzzle jump a lot. They're both wonderful pieces of craftsmanship, extremely accurate, and fun to shoot. The .475, in particular, is really impressive. It will put 5 325gr Gold Dots in 2" at 100 yards, and shoots the 420gr LBT almost as well. It's a helluva deer, elk, moose, or anything gun. The best thing is that my wife surprised me with it. What a gal!

I'm a Ruger fan as well, but there's no comparison to my wife's Blackhawk.

The price point is the driver, here, I'm sure. A FA will now set you back 2 grand, which is twice what I paid for the Casull in 1994.
