Burnin Powder

G'Day Fella's,

Through the week, an old mate of mine (John Ab......) asked me if I could arrange for his young bloke Sam, to shoot a handgun or two. Sam will be going in for his final interview on Monday, to see if he will be accepted in to the Australian military. So John wanted to give Sam a bit of experience shooting a handgun. Once I was given the nod by our club President (Neal), to have non members shooting on the range, it was all go!

Well all I can say is, I need to get a Computer Game in which you use a toy handgun to shoot all the "Baddies", because Sam only missed the target a few times! For a young person that had never shot any handgun before, he was shooting Very Respectable groups straight off!

We started with a 3" S&W M63 in .38 Special, then a 6" S&W 586 in .357 Mag, a Glock 19 and a HS2000 (Springfield XD) both in 9mm Luger and also a Kimber 1911 in .38 Super!
Initially, the IPSC target was at 10 meters, when I seen how good a shot he was we put the target at 15m.

We initially shot these handguns in the above order and then just swapped around, shooting them as Sam (and his Dad) felt like it. In all, we shot off about 300 rounds of the handgun ammo and had a great arvo doing it.
We finished off the day by shooting off about 12 shots through my .340 Weatherby Mag and then sighting in Sam's M94 .30-30.

So now Sam has some actual experience that I hope will serve him well for the rest of his life (but being a bit of a pacifist, I hope he never needs to utilise those skills, on the job) and some serious Braggin Rights!

What a great day!!!

Hi Homer

Its funny you mention this. I introduced an older fella to handguns a couple of weeks ago and he is totally sold. Another converted shooter to up the numbers !!
Once people have had a go they almost always take it up.
If more people could be persuaded to just try it out there would be no threat to our sport from the greens etc etc.

Good on you both, Homer and Bob, for introducing newbies to firearms. Thank you.

G'Day Fella's,

It's good to get others involved in this great sport (Rifle, Shotgun or Handgun)!
It's a Win-Win situation, because you actually get more out of it, than you put into it!!!

Also, as I have been heard to say on occasions; "It Sure Beats Playing Golf"!

Re: Burnin Powder

I know this might seem trite, but my grandfather (Lord, Bless Him) understood two great quotations:

1) "If you take your child hunting, you won't have to hunt for your child"; and,

2) "God created all men...Col. Colt made all men equal".

I don't think I have ever seen more joy than when a "newbie" takes their first shots - particularly, if they hit what they were aiming at! Unless, it's that which is felt by the one who took them shooting.

Keep up the good (and fun) work...

Reggie

(btw, using golf balls as targets is more fun than you can imagine...)
