Quote: Looks good! PH0581 HOWDAH HUNTER PISTOL 20X20 $650.00 Classic large caliber double barrel pistol in the English gunsmith school style, used at close range to stop tigers which commonly leaped upon elephants carrying hunters in Howdah in the far away colonial territories. The stock is a three-quarter stock w/checkered pistol grip. European walnut w/satin finish. 20 ga. smoothbore double barrel, blued, tapered round - .985 at breeh to .825 at muzzle. Front sight is a brass bead. Barrel is 11 1/4" in length. Uses #11 percussion caps. Features color casehardened steel furniture which includes locks, buttcap, wedge plates, triggerplate, triggerguard & tang. Engraved lockplates (Rhino & scrolls on one - Leopard on other). Scroll engraving on hook breech tang & triggerplate. Overall length of pistol is 18 1/2". Uses a 1/4X28 nipple (NP1365). Recommended load is 25 grains of 2F black powder with 1 oz. shot. Manufactured in Italy by Pedersoli. |
Note the length of the nipple noses, which keep the hammers from curling over the fences. They are easily trimmed back such as these. Also a bit of file work behind the nipple seats can make the nipples 'stand proud' as they should be. The reason for this modification is to make them look more pleasing to the eye, as the English pattern of nipple to hammer fit should be presented. |

I made the call today to the owner. It is out on consignment and he will ring me tomorrow and let me know if it is still there. It is a Lancaster O/U and is in .577, I do not know if that is .577 BPE or a shorter pistol version. It is hard to imagine a .577 BPE pistol but they were tougher then. I will post more information as I get it Regards |

Terrific old hand cannons. Perhaps I'll break down and buy one of the new ones from Dixie. |

Checkman- Go for the 20/20 You won't be disappointed! Mine is a ripper and tons of fun to shoot. I have pounds and pounds of roundball that I got ultra cheap from a shop that couldn't move it (new old commercial stock) so they sold it to me for about 1/4 the spot price of pure lead. If you get one, get a roundball mould to go with it. Cheers Tinker |

BTW: You can see a howdah pistol in last Sherlock Holmes film in hands of the Chief police. Martin |

Glad this is back TTT I apologise to all interested parties, I spoke to the owner of that gun today and totally forgot to ask if he had any news. I will attend to it tomorrow, too much on my mind. Sorry to all. Regards |

There are plenty of tired back action hammer shotguns around. Why not build a roundball smoothbore howdah from one? |

Quote: Hey, Huvius...great idea! And...for a good kitchen-table and legal "user", pay Uncle Sam the $200 sucker stamp and make up a cheapy. A Stoeger or some such double chopped to 8 inches with a pistol grip. I've wanted such a user for a long time. What fun! And tho Tink's is really the way top go, I think a 12 bore would be, well, interesting. I had a 19-inch bbl'd, 4 lb H&R singleshot 12 bore that was the "Fat Girl", ie Tonzafun itself. I think a 2.5 lb Modern Howdah legal enough to show off In Town would be a Hoot. And in a holster on the hip while skiing would stop at least one wolf from humpin' my leg should such an eventuality present itself... |

Quote: EXACTLY - not a difficult job, either. If wanting something more modern, for less than the cost of the 'new one', a person can pick up a used 12 bore side by side caplock, and build his own. Perhaps a week of evenings is all it takes to make the stock, another week for finishing and done. 12 bore Howdah! The hardwood dealers usually have good walnut 'shrots', 2 1/2" side, X about 15X15" for around $20.00 to @30.00 with good figure. Cheap Pedersoli, Navy Arms or Armi San Polo 12 bore - perhaps $100.00 to $300.00 for the used gun + the wood. All 'parts' are already there, whereas to buy a set of barrels, soldering ribs, good locks, triggers, trigger bar, trigger gaurd - about $1000.00 for parts or more. A double 12 (or 10) bore Howdah would be a worthwile addition to one's belt - for maurading wolves, both 2 and 4 legged. |

Here. Same gun as cabelas sells, without going through cabelas. I want one myself but can't justify the money for it. They also offer it in kit form for a bit cheaper if you want to assemble it and finish the stock. http://www.dixiegunworks.com/product_info.php?products_id=14020 Edit-I see I was beaten by quite a bit. |

wont even consider a cabelas product they just dont do things in a way i would trust to corperate back stabbing well i'll stop there the dixie model seems nice but a home built one with 58 conicals sound interesting |

I'm tempted, looks like a laugh, 4 1/2 pounds though ? maybe the barrels are too long. what would be the black powder/pyrodex charge ? are there moulds available ? best, Mike |

.58 cal. is well covered by many moulds in many slightly different close sizes, round ball and slugs as well as traditional minnie 'balls'. ie; .562, .570, 575, .580 - RB moulds - slug and minnie moulds from .575", .577", .580", .585". Being a Pedersoli, it will probably shoot RB's best. I would use a .570" ball and .018" patch, or a .562" ball and .022" patch. Pistols usually don't shoot more than about 60gr. of powder and that will give a good charge. Pedersoli will tell you the max charge for the asking. |

I own one of the 20/20 smoothbore pedersoli howdah pistols, got it in kit from at Dixie. It's truly a ripper with tightly patched .600 roundball on 70gr FFg Goex. With this load it prints them right next to each other, right over the bead at 35 yards. That powder load is essentially the same load I'd been running in one of the 16-bore rifles - had the old powder measure (dipper) from a cased set on the bench that day and 'filled her up' with Goex. The sound is glorious. The recoil is about what you'd expect, and the pistol handles very nicely. The .58/.58 (with a 1/24" rate of twist, by the way) appears to be a new offering in the pedersoli line and I might have considered it when I got mine (couple or so years ago) but in retrospect I'm glad I got what I got as it's very consistent with the big powder charge, and it runs nicely as a shot-pistol with less powder and #5 shot. In field terms, especially where it'd be practical - 35 yards is about the max distance you'd expect to encounter something needing a gunshot in the woods. The 20/20 does it - and it's versatile. Cheers Tinker |

IMHO this is not a pistlo but a "pocket rifle" as you can also buy a detachable stock. A good gun as coach gun.LOL. Martin |

24" is the perfect twist for reasonable loads in a .58 Pistol with round ball. |

because here it would be illegal....with a shotgun barrels have to be 18" |

A double 12 bore handgun purposely made as a handgun would be OK - here. To cut down a shotgun, even re-stocking it, would make it prohibited - ei; sawed off shotgun. You can shorten a shotgun to an overall length of 24"(which is really shot and 'nasty' looking, but it must still be designed to be shot with two hands -ie: visible and useable butt stock. This means the barrels could be very short. However - first cop or game officer who sees it will confiscate it - gauranteed. You'll get it back, but it will be gone and you might even get a ride in the back seat of his/her car. At least, if a game officer sees it, they'll call the police and hold you until a PC arrives. No explaining on legal lengths will work - they aren't interested in what's right or wrong according to the law - only that that shotgun has been cut off and looks bad enough it should be illegal - such is the system here. Legal barrel lengths are subject to semi-auto's only - 18 1/2". |

and leather pants at our age should also be.................. illegal................. |

I do remember all the hair that used to be on top of my head however. |

I chronoed some rounds through that Wilkinson today and got an average of 608fps for 5 shots from the right barrel, for 369 ft-lb of energy. That is with 70gns of Goex Fg under a 450 grain bullet, and from a 7" barrel. The left barrel has a much much lighter trigger pull and I was able to get groups of 1.25" at 15 yards. The right was much larger, and also printed much higher and to the right than the left barrel. The gun weighs 2lb 9 ounces and has 7" barrels. I'm going to try FFg out of curiosity, but think I'll stick to these loads for normal use to minimize wear. I'm also having a slightly larger mold made up (.592" and 500 grains w/solid nose) with a hollow point pin so I can vary the weight a bit. I doubt it will make much difference for a gun designed to shoot things at arms length, but worth a try. I'll post the results here as I figure out more about this interesting piece of history. |

Many original "percussion" side by sides, 12's, 14's, 16's and 20's have very good breeches, while the barrels might have deep dents or rust-through areas. Chopping these barrels off at 10" to 14" will leave a good set of tubes, already joined and breeched, along with a useable double barreled tang. Re-solder (or JB) filling the ends of the ribs and replacing the bead leaves a good basis for making a Howdah pistol - completely legal - here. A set of back-action or side locks are available from Track, along with triggers, trigger plate, gaurd, etc. It's a simple build for anyone used to using chisels and a draw knife. |

How 'bout this? I've got a Westley Richards 10-gauge double made in 1872. I'm in it $1500. It shows it's age. Whack the bbls down to, oh say, 9-10". Grind out a Howdah stock. Winchester sells BP 10-g. loads. Buck & Ball? Or, should I leave the gun alone. I'm really in need of a Howda. The tigers are gathering at my windows as I speak. (You doubt me? I live in Las Vegas. Many, many tigers here.) |

I would love a Howdah too. Or a .577" revolver. I am thinking of a Webley style revolver, using a short case, perhaps pushing a 600 grain bullet to 650 fps. |
